How to transport a cab
I'm looking at buying a cab. I have a 2004 Dodge ram Quad Cab and a 5x8 trailer to go get it with. Anyideas from someone who has hauled one before of how I can do this
1) safest 2) easiest 3) without damaging the cab (ie. cab corners) Thanks

We pulled a 72 GMC 3500 on about a 15x10 farm trailer and we also used about the same size trailer for a cab and it was easy, just use a lot of big straps and keep the cab over the axles. That probably don't help much since it was a big trailer, but there's a ton of guys that have used smaller trailers to do this.

cab will fit in the back of the truck. turn it sideways and you don't need trailer.

I hauled one in the back of my SWB. I threw a few tires down to keep the cab corners off the floor, and strapped it down. Hauled it 900 miles that way.

I hauled my cab for my 59 800 miles on this trailer.
Sure got some strange looks. A cab is not that heavy. The picture does not show it, but I have blocks of wood under the centre of the cab supporting the weight.

If your bed is large enough, the cab will fit nicely inside. If the rockers are solid, then you can set the cab on two skids, (6" high approximately), center the cab over the wheel wells and then put some straps onm to keep it from shifting. If the rockers are not solid then you will need to crib up to the two long cab braces.
Here is a pic of the last cab we picked up in Indiana. Jim |

been there, done that, you need about 3 people to get a 67-72 cab on a 5x8 trailer, (thanks dtlilly) the only thing to worry about (as has already been mentioned) is bending the lower rear portion of the cab corner. if you are gonna replace them any way, dont sweat that, let em bend.
if they are in good shape, put a couple of 4x4 blocks under each corner of the cab. use 4 ratchet straps to tie it down good. it will fit on the trailer like a glove. just center the transmission hump over the trailer axle with the cab sitting sideways on the trailer. i hauled mine like this behind a jeep liberty with a small v-6. ran 70-80 all the way from memphis to birmingham, gas milage was the same as with the empty trailer on the way up. go for it !!! It'll work with a SWB too, but shutting the tailgate may pit a small dent in the cab side.
Hauled mine from Harker Heights Tx To Columbus Ohio like this... about 1220 miles or so. Then I had to drive around town like this for a month or so. handled a little funny...but not too bad. |

Oh yeah, i had 300 pounds worth of tools, a set of small block heads, and that 400 small block that you can see through the fence there all thrown in the spare cab too. All this on a tow bar hooked to the back of a 25 foot moving van.
