Need Help w/ Door Locks - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, here's the problem. I can lock my doors when the doors are open but when I shut the doors, they do not stay locked. I think the problem is the same if I lock the doors from the inside. All I have to do is push the button on the door handle and they pop right open. Anybody have any advice other than replacing the latch assemblies at $50 a pop?

Oh, and the door lock cylinders are frozen too.

It's normal. The only way to lock a door on a 67-72 is with the key from the outside or popping the button down on the inside and then staying inside. There is no way to lock it and then close the door. Add power remote locks if you really can't stand it.

Does work great for making sure you cant lock your keys in the truck. Hated that when my wife did that with the car.

So if I replace the frozen lock cylinders, I should be good to go?

You should be good to go. Why not squirt some wd-40 or kroil into the locks and work them free, really shouldn't be that hard or am I not understanding something.

I tried to loosen them up with some WD-40 but they're not budging and I'm afraid if I put too much more pressure on it, I'll bust the key.

I was thinking about trying some liquid wrench and letting it set for a while. And if that don't work them I'm gonna have to go with new lock cylinders I think.

So you tried to lock the doors...even though you can't unlock them with the key?

I would try pulling the door panel off, and soak all the linkages and the back side of the lock cylinder with PB Blaster. This stuff is way better than WD40 could dream of being....Liquid wrench is ok...but PB is still way better.

Can you lock them with the door open? If you can then try pushing on the door when you lock it. It may just need a little nudge to take the pressure off the mechanism.

i second the pb best stuff ive ever used on rusty fasteners sprayed 36 year old rear bumper bolts let them set 30 minutes broke them loose with wrench then turned them off by hand great stuff
