steering box adjustment

Does anyone know the proper steps on how to adjust my steering box in a 72shortbed K10?

Thanks for any help.

It's generally not recommended - most guys will say if it needs adjusting, it needs replacing. However, I can tell you what I have done (successfully) but you do it at your own risk! I am not advising you to do this!

On top of the box is a large slotted adjuster head held in place by a jamnut. Use a large screwdriver to hold it firmly in position while you loosen the nut. Turn the adjuster clockwise just a small amount, then tighten the jamnut and try it. If you overtighten the adjuster, the steering will drag, and will not return to center freely on its own. If still too loose, you wil still have excessive play. Experiment until you get it right.

It's a simple procedure but you must be aware that the steering may become difficult, and be prepared for it. This will likely just buy you some time until you will need to replace the steering box.

Use right hand to rock the rag joint back and forth slightly while slowly turning the adjuster screw, you can feel when most slop is gone, the screw turns easy, just don't tighten to far. This has worked on every power setup I've had, most manual setups I have tried just keep getting looser over time, but helps them for a while.

Worked just fine for me. Thank you very much. I turned it about 3/4 of a turn and its tight enough for me.
