won't cut off

Im working on my brothers 74 chevy pickup and it won't turn off with the key.I have to choke the carb to get it to turn off.The red wire coming from the starter is hooked up to the other red wires on the firewall[alt, distribitor].I already checked the switch on steering colum even put another one on it.Any ideas?? Never mind figured it out as soon as I reread my own post. The dist. wire should not be hot all the time.
