I don't know for sure, but I think it may work depending on the size of the tire you plan on using. For 8" wide wheels, folks use around a 5" BS on the front. So, a 5 3/4" BS on a 9" wheel may work. Maybe, someone who has done this will chime in.

What size tire would you be running?

I've run a 17x8 rim with 4.5" bs and a 17x9.5 with 5" bs with no problems on my 77 blazer with a 5" drop in the front. Tire size on both was 245/45zr17, or about 25.7" tall.

A taller tire would probably hit the fender lip and more backspacing might rub the lower control arms at full lock, or possibly the tie rod ends. The best thing to do would be to go to a tire shop that has a rim the size you want and bolt it on to check for clearance issues.
