What's involved w/installing intermittent wipers

I have a 76 I would like to install intermittent windshield wipers in.
Can anyone tell me what I need to change out for this?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

you need the correct wiper switch and the intermittent box that goes with it. The box plugs into the switch and your factory harness plugs into the box. And then you have intermittent wipers. Its that easy............

I used to have part numbers, but I just moved, so I have no idea where they are.

The switch was like $30 new and the box was $80. Both AC Delco parts. The boxes are notorious for going out though......

So even a truck that didn't come with delay wipers can be converted over to them with just the box and the switch? A factory harness that didn't come with delay will have the open plug-ins hanging there?

That depends on what year it's going in to. GM did not offer intermittent wipers on 73-76 trucks. There were very few on the 77's and they had problems with those. In 78 they changed the wiper switch and the harness too. From what I can figure out, the 78-83 (84-87 is on the stalk) switch can be made to work in the dash with minor mods, but the harness & plugs are different. I'm sure they can be modified as well, but it is not a plug and play deal....

If you want to take a look at an old thread on this subject I have it saved here- Look inside Keep in mind that the pics that were attached in that thread were lost in one of the forum updates so it is hard to follow.

I am interested in this as well. My '77 has intermittant wipers... I think. But I am going to rewire the whole truck with a Painless harness anyway so the factory wiring will get tossed. I do want to convert to a turn signal stalk wiper switch arrangement. Can I just slap a newer stalk into my old steering column and run the wires for it, or will I need to grab a column from a donar truck that already has it? Then I would need the control box for the later year models and just wire it up per the factory diagrams, right?

If you have a "working" 77 control module then toss it my way neighbor. Frank (7T7) sent me the dead control module from his 77 so I have a switch, part of a harness and a module that doesn't work. I would love to have one that does work to put in my 77. That would save me the trouble of modifying a 78-83 set up.

If you go to a stalk mounted control you are going to need to switch columns, but that creates other issues. The connector and the intermediate shafts are different on the later columns....

I can't say for certain that my intermittant wiper control box 'works'. It has been over 3 years since I last drove the truck! I've drank a few beers and slept since then. But if I can finish the front suspension this weekend, I'll drag the truck out of the garage and dig thru my pile of parts. If I find it, you are welcome to it.

Hey that's cool! Even if I doesn't work I would like to have it and the harness if you have no use for them. Between what you have, and what I have I might be able to put one together. If not I can mod a later model unit to work...

You can locate these switches and delay control modules at your favorite local salvage (junk) yard. They do go out. So over the past several months, I've gathered about 3 spare switches and control modules. If you like to 'junk yard', they are relative easy to find.
