they should be held on with adhesive on the pillars, and spotwelded to the inner rockers and floorpan. there's probably a correct way of removing them, but i just took a sawzaw to the cab the last 2 times.

Drill out all the spot welds. If they are hard to see, going over the welds with sandpaper will make them more visible. Use a small bit for pilot, then larger. Try not to drill any deeper than required to break it loose.

after fighting with the spot welds for about 1/2 an hour i got frustrated and grabbed the air chissel. i removed both rockers in the course of about 5 minutes without damaging the surrounding metal

Don't help too much . . ....

You will need to drill out the spot welds & do some grinding. You can make it easier to find the spot welds by scuffing the whole bottom of the jamb w/some coarse scotch-brite or sand paper.

I have never seen a set glued in. They have always been spot welded on the trucks that I have worked on. Eastwood has a good spot weld removal tool. Really like the airbag idea..... grind them off in style!

I just used a die grinder and cut the spot welds to remove the rocker. Took 15 minutes to do both sides

How many spot welds are there usually and their locations thru the areas?
Thanx!

About 1 billion

or so it will seem. There on the bottom seam, on the top by the sill plate on the rear going up the side of the cab, on the front by the pillar. Basically everywhere that the rocker touches the cab.

spot weld cutter

A good sharpe spot weld cutter instead of a bit will do a lot less damage to the remaining metal.

got one started

Thanks for the input! I too like the idea of dropping it and letting the road take over but that would add even more dollars to the money pit.

Just so others know I took a few photos of the project. Not a step by step but I can do that on the next one.
I just used a chisel and knocked the welds loose. Too many spot welds to drill out. Probably one every 1/2 inch or so.
Hope this thread may help others.
