Pre-flight safety check? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm hopefully about to taker 'er out for an actual street drive soon (6 miles to the muffler shop will be a loud 6 miles

). Any ideas on things to check before I leave the subdivision? I've put in a crate 350 and 700r4; the cab and bed have been off, etc.

So far my list is:

1. Check bolts for tightness
2. Check lights
3. Brakes brakes brakes
4. Fire extingusher
5. make sure nothing can reach out and touch headers, belts, etc.
6. Plenty of gas, battery, coolant, atf, and oil; tool box in the cab

Also, with no wood or strips in the bed, it's really not bolted down. I figure a couple of tie-down straps around the bed&frame along with bolts through the frame at the rear of the bed should keep her in place?

just make sure the bed is tight,i had one a a truck bed trailer that wasn't bolted down,and i just threw one starp around it and the frame,i thought it was tight,but by the time i got home(about 3 miles and going slow) the bed was about on the ground on one side,BE CAREFUL

Has your motor been broken in yet? I would spend a few bucks and have it towed to the muffler shop. It will be so loud you will not be able to here if somthing is going wronge untill it is to late. If this was a tried and tru motor and vehical I would say go for it but being that it has been apart I would have it towed. Just my $.02!!

Maybe a few quarts of ATF for when the torque converter fills up it may be low. And remember we talked about taking it to the tranny shop and let them set up the TV cable and check the pressures.I think I would just tow it down like ROKCRLN advised.

So that would mean towing it over there and driving it home? Not a bad idea. So far I've for $0.04 towards towing. I'm sure the TV cable is set properly, but given that EVERYTHING has been replaced or messed with since the truck was driven 2 yrs ago, there are quite a few variables to consider....
