86swb, I agree with you 100%. My newest truck is a 79, and like you, I like no payment, low insurance, and the fact that I can work on them. My biggest problem is all my tools and truck are at my parents home, 220 miles from me. I didn't mean the money pit comment as a negative, just a fact of life. Anything over 10 years old is going to require some outlay of cash to keep it going.

Look underneath the carpet inside and see if you can see the ground. If you can it may be better to get another cab. You will need to stay with the 73-80 cab since I believe that is the year range the entire front clip was the same. Also look on the outside and see if it looks as if they had bondoed over the rust that was on the exterior. Looking at the underside I am sue there was some on the outside as well.

Personally, I would keep it and see what it would cost for someone to replace the floor and have them see what else may need to be replaced.

I had the same problems with my 77' but was fortunate to know guys in the body industry. These model truck are beginning to really becoming popular with enthusiasts so my advise is to keep it.

You may even consider taking some evening classes for body work at a local vocational school to learn how to fix the rust.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

I would keep it. It is a shame that the outside looks great and you would never believe that much rust would be hidding there.

I'd grab a scraper and do some exploratory digging. If it hasent made it through to the inside completely it's can be saved. Just a shame that PO put that much effort into making whats seen look nice.

Here is what I drove every day until September 11 of last year. It went 125 a week to and from work, and then 450 every weekend to my folks. It has 260,000 miles with a weak 305 and tranny. I am going to have to replace everything. You have a lot of miles left in your truck. Don't get discouraged because of a couple of minor repairs.

There is no bondo in the body. All the body panels were replaced 5 years ago with OEM parts so that is one good thing.

I guess I maybe over reacting. I may just take my chances and drive it until the cab breaks loose. Who knows it my last a while the way it sits.
