Engine/Transmission Combo?

I am a few weeks away from ordering a 410 hp crate 350, and im wondering if i should keep the new th350 that is in it right know or buying my friends 700r4 ($50) that i will have rebuilt, im also thinking about getting rid of the 3.08 gears for some 3.73, i want something quick off the line but also have some top end speed too.

Any input or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

3.73 is a great street / highway gear for a 2wd truck You'd loose a bit of milage, and a bit of top end speed in the end, but you'd have a lot more up and go off the line.

700r4 is a great tranny if you get the usual problems fixed, and get a good one (unlike the one I put into my 89 half ton!). It has a better first gear ratio, and the wonderful overdrive. It isn't quite as tough as the TH350 though, so make sure you get some upgrades done on it!

I would suggest either 3.73's or 3.42 gears, with a 700R4. Of the two, I would prefer the 3.42 gear, but that depends on how you plan to use the truck as well. Also, I would imagine you would want to have the trans gone through, if there is a reason it is only $50.

Thanks guys for all the input, the only question that i have left is if i get the 700r4 rebuilt do you think that it would be strong enough to handle the power of the engine?

Make sure you let the tranny builder know exactly what type of engine its being put behind. If you put some money into one, a 700r4 can be built to withstand 700 horse, but the rebuilder won't build it up unless you tell him to. Make sure you get a shift kit as well, and a NEW tv cable (mine was stretched, got a new looking one at the wrecking yard, and it was also stretched, so I got a new one, and now the tranny shifts like brand new!)

Also make sure that the 700r4 has the speedo cable tailshaft rather than the VSS tail shaft. VSS won't work so good with your speedometer, lol
