Aftermarket Windshield gaskets - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm planning on having my windshield resealed and I'd like to look into the aftermarket gaskets. Anybody had any problems? Just looking for some input. Paid $90 for GM last time, and I'm thinking about going aftermarket this time.

I did have problems on my 72, it leaked continually on the drivers side corner. It was a JC Whitney gasket (if I remember correctly). I'm not cutting any corners on my 71, I bought SoftSeal, I've heard nothing but good reports...... TJ

Bought an aftermarket one just last year from a local supplier. Checked up on it and was told it was top quality. It works and looks great. Paid about $40 for it.

Curious...what kind of sealant do you use inside the rubber gasket/seal and how do you apply it?

Use a liquid butyl type sealant. It comes in a standard caulking gun tube. Very messy stuff!

Thanks for all the input. I found the soffseal site. $62.00 isn't too much cheaper than the GM. I'm still thinking about it. Has anybody used the soffseal gaskets? Or some of the gaskets from LMC, brothers, King, or GMC Paul?

Go with what you KNOW wont leak.... OEM wont leak, and it looks like Soffseal product wont leak...

The windshield is very hard to get out without breaking it, or cutting out the seal... If the thing leaks afterwards, your looking at doing the job over again AND buying another seal.... To me it's not worth $30-40......

When I had my truck painted, I had a new windshield installed, the installer highly suggeted I use OEM seal, he said more time than not the aftermarket stuff will leak.... He's never had any leakage problems with OEM...

Just my 2 cents, you can do whatever you think is best...

Thanks and I agree. The windshield has only been in there a year, but I think I got the wrong gasket. I'm finally gonna get it professionally installed and it looks like I'll probably get another gasket at GM. I got the OEM last time, but after talking to the windshield guy, I must have gotten the first style instead of the second. That would explain how difficult it was. Could not keep the chrome in the gasket when trying to install. Thanks and It looks like it's time to order from the dealer.
