A long time back another board member asked the same ?

Heres what i sugested he do since he had never built up an engine befor.

I told him buy your self a crate engine you will save your self some money and headaches.

He didn't listen to my sugestion and did it him self and he had all kinds of problems with that engine so many in fact that he gave up on his truck and sold it!

Now he drives some POS econo $hit box thing.

Im not in any way trying to tell you what to do i think that learning how to do an engine build up is great but you really need someone there that knows what there doing so if they see you doing something wrong they can stop you from making a huge and costly mistake.

To buy all the parts needed to build a Quility 383 stroker engine you need to use good parts and have a sound block and the skills to build it and some special tooling if your gonna do it correctly.

You could spend 500 to 1000 bux in special tools alone to build an engine.

You will also have to have a machine shop that does good hi pref work and that aint cheap.

This is why it's so much easier to just buy a crate engine not to mention most of the companys that sell them offer some sort of warranty if you do it your self you dont have that insurance!

And if it spins a bearing on its first crank up your out alot of money.

I hope this helps you in your decision and good luck

i have read some of your post and comments iceman and you seem mechanically inclined but a 383 stroker is a tough motor to build and have last a desent amount of time the only other thing i can say is i have heard a 383 will not last very long in a daily driver i dont know this to be fact but just hear say.

I'm gonna have to agree with 87 Stepper. At first glance, rebuilding an engine looks pretty cheap and easy, but once you get down and dirty, you'll find there is a whole lot more to do, and a whole lost more stuff to spend money on than you'd initially expect. Buying a crate engine just makes far more sense, and is actually often quite a bit cheaper than rebuilding an older engine.

However, if you've got an experienced engine builder to help you, along with the time and money for the parts, go for it! It can be a very good learning experience, but you'll be amazed how much more goes into an engine than just bolting a few rotating assembly peices together!
