sounds like with all of the stuff missing, it will only be helpfull to those who have one already, and need the longblock. Will 350 parts bolt up to it?

Check out this months Classic Trucks Mag they have an article on retrofitting these engines with an intake and carb. Edelbrock and GM both make carb intakes for these engines and MSD makes a controler for the ignition system. On the dyno with a RPM manifold the engine made 352HP, with a single plane GM intake and 4 hole carb spacer they made 365 HP. I think you could pick up another easy 30+ HP with a GM HOT cam and headers. I think it would make a slick engine for an old truck. If the engine wasn't the only part of my truck finished I'de be shopping for a low mileage LS1.

Probably costs more to convert to carb than to buy one with EFI. Why use an old carb on an badass motor with a badass EFI system that came with it from the factory? :P

Because it isnt like swapping in a TBI/TPI motor. Its OBDII, and it has VATS. You have to pay somebody to reprogram the computer to elimintate VATS (Vehicle Anti Teft System) umongst other things, plus have you seen the wiring harnass for this thing?? Yeowsa is all I can say. I have a 5.3 sitting in my garage, and I have done some research on the swap into my '72. I think the Carb'd setup will actually be cheaper than making the FI work. I plan on going broke making the FI setup work cuz I more than likely wont realize the mileage over having a carb. Anyone have the motor specs for the SSR handy?

Here's a link to the SSR 03 engine spec the 02 was about 10 hp less I think. I didn't realize that the SSR was so heavy. 4760 curb weight. GM needs to put that thing on a diet or add forced induction if they want it to compete with Dodge and Ford!

Running the carb would simplify the swap for sure. It would also make retuning for engine modifications less complicated and expensive. I think the engine has a lot going for it even with a carb on top. It would be nice to see someone come up with something to clean up all the ignition modules and wiring on the valve covers. I think one of these engines dressed with a carb aluminum air cleaner and finned valve covers minus all the wiring would be cool sitting in a classic.
