I know a couple people who have done it and they have not had any problems. I know there was an old thread on here sometime this summer about it.

that is what mine is, goes from the header to a muffler and then out the side.
if you need i will take a pic of the underside in the morning so you can see the routing... |

I HAD mine like that and it didn't hurt a thing. Mine totally rusted the bottom off the pipes, so I took it out.

I had that setup on an 65 el camino (exit right in front of the rear tires). The exhaust would stink up the cab when you are not moving and the windows were down.

my 76 has headers into glasspacks and exit out in front of the tires, and it is all well clear of the gas tank.

I know someone on here has there exhaust exiting just infront of the rear wheel. They had pics. The pipe was almost hidden but you could just see it in front of the rear wheel well. Looked slick.

my dad has 4 piped on each side but only 1 on each side works due to the gas tank location

the tanks have plastic shields, this alone gives you 2 or 3 inches to play with and you only need 3 inches with a poly tank and yours are steel so no big deal.

I'm just about to do that with my I6 it did come out for the longest time just beside the gas tank underneath my 81 does have a heatshield around the gas tank though. My 85 had the exhaust come just to right beside the gas tank underneath as well except with no heat shield, although this truck I've never had on the road and the gas tank is patched it hasn't had a new muffler in awhile and it doesn't appear to have ever exploded therefore I think your safe

Plenty of room with mine and a 2 1/2" exhaust.

This truck doesn't have the side tanks anymore, but the pipes would still clear. The tips are 5" echo chambers, infront of Moroso Race Bullets. It's a tad loud.

You won't have any trouble with the side exit but I can tell you that it is plenty louder for the driver of the truck. It may sound cool for awhile but I quickly tired of it. My inside dual blew out on the drivers side taking the side pipe with it. The muffler is about exits just behind the gas tank to the rear now. Much quieter and more pleasant to drive.

heres mine. i've posted many pics before, but heres some more. it was rear exhaust when i bought it, so i had it switched over, and i like it SO much more. louder (in the cab and overall), a little "meaner" looking, and in just the right place for ricers.
ps, i really like the 2nd pic
