Twin '68 50th Anniversary Longhorns...The Twins are reunited!
After a harrowing road trip and tow from Lynden, WA to Kent, CARS4567 and I got the Big Block Longhorn home. We left at 3:30AM under a full moon when the street racers were still out looking for their last chance power drive. It only took us an hour and a half to get there, 15 minutes to load and three hours to drive back. UHaul does not make a trailer big enough to properly balance a Longhorn...you can trust me on this one. Anything over 40 mph downhill turns into a white knuckle "tank-slapper" and 48 is tops going up hill. Put on the emergency flashers, kick back with a large cup of JOE and enjoy the sunshine!
I say reunited since they were born only about 2-weeks apart in the Fremont, GM plant in June-July 1968. It would have been really cool if they had been consecutive serial numbers! They are home and it is time to really get serious about the resto! The new one came with all new goodies...including new Longhorn emblems! I need to finish the 454 and TH400 for this one. It will take me days to inventory all the new goodies that came with it. The new Big Block Longhorn is nicely optioned with factory AC, Camper Wiring, TH400, Power Brakes, Power Steering, etc. The only thing I would have liked additional would have been buckets and tach. The body man that owned it was restoring it so he bought just about everything new including inner fenders, core support and all the exterior trim. He had new front discs powder coated black and even new chrome bumpers! He has done most of the body work and has epoxy primer on the box. I only need to strip and epoxy the gutters, fix one fender pocket sand and paint. I was not going to buy it but it was just too good to pass up!

Dennis, Thanks...I am going to check my water pump and see what I have. It looks like you have a long spacer and your fan is still only half in the shroud. I think I must have a long water pump on there. The original owner said he had to replace lots of water pumps on this 327 for some reason. He said he always carried a spare! The truck came with a new water pump in a box! I did not use it for some reason and I will bet it was because the long vs. short shaft. More research required to get this puppy back to stock.

Wow... 2 of them & both Longhorns! I hope to be fortunate enough to find a 50th short fleet some day down the road. The more I look at the 50th the more addictive they seem to be (lol). Keep us updated Mark I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. Doug

Nice set, congratulations! Is that chrome ring I see the one that holds the 67-68 full wheel covers?

Pilgrim, That is a polished stainless trim ring for a 16.5-inch wheel. P.O. was going to install the trim rings with the original polished stainless hub caps.

Andy, I am holding off on any more restoration work until you get here...LOL! I was noticing that the big block unit has new 2.5-inch exhaust and new Flowmasters with the crossover pipe. That will sound cool with the 454 (now 460) when I get it together....WHOOOO HOOOOO!
Everytime I look at them I feel like I won the lottery! The wife is beginning to get jealous! My son, on the other hand, says..."rare but highly undesireable". I think he wanted another shorty that he could slam...LOL...KIDS!

As long as people think they are undesirable, then the prices will stay in the sane range.
Waiting untill i get there? Hmmmm, didn't know I was headed there. |
