I just got a brillaint idea (maybe). OK. My door panel inserts on my 72 are all worn and scratched. I got to thinking.. why not make some new ones in Woods class out of real wood. Then why not make my own parts for the gauge panel, glovebox,ect. out of the wood of my choice.
Has anyone ever done this? Good idea? Bad idea? How will it stand up to the heat and the sun on hot summer days in parking lots.

have seen pics online of 67-72 dah bezel and glovebox door made of wood, but not of door panels or anything like that, heck with sme creativity, it coulnt be all tha hard to make a dash pad from wood if you spend the time carving and sanding its shape,,, a nice oak tree trunk piece would be perfect start... some nice clearcoat on it would be awesome....

You can do it but it's a paint to get them just right. I've seen lots of them out there and they just look chunky to me. I would go with vener, if you really good at cutting.

For the '67-'72 dash pad, could you use a stair rail? They are pre-cut, and sometimes even pre-finished.

I used oak for my dash and glovebox door and it has held up pretty well. My only mistake was not coating the back side of the dash and it has since split. I made a new one that is not in yet and coated the back of it. Like Randy and everyone else said though, its difficult to get it all to fit, but if you are patient it will come together. The door panels would look really nice. I'm going to trim my headliner in oak too if I ever get around to it. Good luck, Jeff.

I was thinking of doing some custom wood in my interior as well. I was thinking of cherry, and then take some purpleheart or zebrawood and inlay it in the shape of a bowtie on the glovebox door, along with a small one in the guage cluster. If I do this, I'll let you know....

I think that to cut the wood door panel inserts I will get the old ones and get it all measured out. Then I am not sure how I am going to do the gauge cluster and glovebox. Possibly somthing on the ashtray door. Maybe one of those nice wood steering wheels... I may have something going on here. What type of wood matches the woodgrain on the outside trim?
I figure that once I am out of HS I will not have the resources of a shop teacher with 30 years teaching (really this year is his 30th) and all the equipment that is at school.

I really like the looks of the door panels. The gauges look good to but looks like it'd be harder to cut out. You think I'd be able to make somthing to fit over the old? Or make the whole gauge panel?
