brakes locking up?
Hey my room mate is having problems with his brakes. He took it to a shop and they wanted two hundred and fifty bucks to fix it. They said that the brakes are starting to lock up. What could be causing this? I was going to go out tomorrow and look at it and maybe test drive it. Any ideas are really appreciated. It is a crx(the universal college car that half the students in america drive). Thanks

bad pads can do that, so can warped rotors.

I'd bet on the warped rotors. My corrolla was doing that with one wheel and that's what it was.

Which wheel/s is/are locking up? After I installed my front discs, with an ECE kit, my rears would lock too easily...caled Dave at ECE to ask...he said rear wheel cylinder, pulled the drums and bam, both of them were toast. So make sure to check the wheel cylinders too.

I'm with Project1970. In any case, around here that price for any kind of brake work sounds reasonable. In most cases people don't drive away for less than $600 in Connecticut in most shops. (It's sad but true)

Any brake fluid spilling onto the pads/shoes can cause "grabbing", and old sticky calipers can stay stuck on. This is common, if they drag, and get really hot, it may well be the caliper needs an overhaul/changeout.
Leaking wheel cylinders can cause than sudden grab and lockup, then you let off the brake and your okay again. Sticky calipers brake on, then stays on after you let off the brake. If after driving, the wheel rim is very hot, I suspect caliper.
