How to ID this steering column? Is this original or not? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My "new" truck came with a tilt-wheel column, but I just noticed that the hazard button is the type from a '78-up model (if I remember right). Here's the only pic I've got of it for now, which doesn't show the right side of the column, but... can any of you guys tell by looking if this is the correct column for a '72?

The button in question is the newer type - the kind with the outer ring you pull up on to release the button after you pushed it.

I am going to take a guess here but that looks like a van tilt because of the fat part on the lower column half but I could be wrong. One of the EXPERTS on the board will know for sure. I have a van tilt and it looks like it. You can also look at the connector at the bottom of

The 4 way flasher button doesn't really nean anything...the replacement switches are like that. I actually think that was more like 74 or 75 that the feds required the button be les prone to accidental switching.
We'll need pics of the under hoor portion of the column in order to tell you if it is a van unit or a truck piece.
What does the glove box say?

The easiest way to tell the difference between a van tilt and a truck tilt is by looking at the amount of shaft length sticking out of the end of the column. The van tilt shaft is quite a bit longer. The first picture is of a van tilt, and the second is of a truck tilt. You can also see how the neutral/safety switch is in different locations.

my 72 tilt has a hazzard button like that, but on the other side. 73 and up columns have the ignition in them, while we have it in the dash.

He was using the hazzard button to ID the year of the column, not where it came from. The Van's didn't get a column mounted ignition untill 82. Either way, the hazzard button should be on the lower passenger side.
