Newbie Here! Howdy, any advice? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Howdy folks, My name is Rick. I just bought a 71' LWB Cheyene from another member (bilgewiper). See ebay auction # 4578579256 Needs paint but mechanically very sound and drives really nice. The first things I've got to tackle are the windows and the seat. I ordered a pair of regulators and a stock "scroll" seat cover. I'm not intimidated by the window regulator job, as I've done it on other cars and trucks. However, I'm not sure about the skill level required to reskin the seat. Anyone out there ever done that job? Also the seat wont move for & aft correctly. The drivers side seat track seems to move ok but the passenger side ain't movin. Maybe something screwy with that wire that runs from side to side? I could use any tech tips where this stuff is concerned.

Yes, Guardrail just bought my truck. It definantly went to good home. I am sure you will all will give him any help he needs such as krue just did. Also, I would like to say thanks to everybody here who helped me with issues while I owned it over the last few years. I am missing that truck already. Today I drug out the old converted GMC truck bed trailer that my dad bought used in 1971 for $60. It hasn't been used in a few years because I had the truck. I tore out the rotton plywood covering up a even more rotten original wood pickup bed. Then I had to use the trailer with no bed just to go to Home Depot to get wood to repair it............if only I had done that last week when I still had the truck. LOL!

The wire that connects the passenger side seat rail to the driver side rail should not have any slack in it. If it's the original wire, then it should be solid and about 1/8" in diameter. There should be a hook hanging from the bottom of the seat, somewhere near the middle of the seat that holds the wire up and keeps it tight. You could always just replace the wire you've got with a few tight loops of piano wire.

Welcome! Put the seat covers in the dryer for a little bit to soften them up, that really helps in stretching them over the frames. Get the hog ring pliers. Don't skimp and think you can do the hog rings with a regular pair of pliers. You won't regret the few extra bucks.

A couple of other things - If you have areas of bad foam, you can cut them away and replace with a pieces of donor foam. Go to an upholstery shop to get the spray adhesive to join the pieces. Also, consider wrapping your foam with burlap (available at upholstery shop). This helps the new covers slide on and also keeps the old foam from having dusty particles flaking off.
