Caddy swap update...
This is interesting...
Seems everyone I have spoken to about the caddy engine says that you either have to gat an engine filter relocation kit, or do this; Here is the interesting part. I have the 425 hanging from the hoist as I type this (thanks again mike) and bolted to the tranny, (unmoved) The drivers side valve cover is just barely touching the firewall by the clutch hole, sitting down in the frame rails further down that it will end up, yet my filter does not need moved. |

Also, I found that i won't have to do this;
(the cutting) to run my pipes. I am able to tuck it all in like this; and this; The drivers side does have a nub on the manifold that needs grinded off, and the brake lines are also touching the manifold, so they'll need moved too, but so far it's looking pretty good. Here is a pic of the valve cover touching teh fire wall, which brings up another thread all together. |

Cad used 3 different oil filter housings from what I have read. Only one of them requires the torch to make it work. It looks like you have the second type which works in most trucks and the third type which is nearly verticle and works the best.
I am watching your progress with great interest. It could be the Cad 500 in my machine shed that is causing it.

Andy, I like the new MC and manifolds...can't you do something about that block? It would make it feel better and run better if it were painted...LOL! They have feelings, don't ya know?

Andy, you have said how expensive gaskets are for your 425 engine. Will this set work? It seems cheap enough.

Gee Emm....I have given some thought to that, and this was just a mock up, but thanks. Da-Burb...never heard that one. I know the one off the 472 is the same as the one mounted on there. Here is a shot that shows how much engine to firewall room there is too.(gotta have some there) |

I did a little mis-remembering, but I found my caddy swap papers. The oil filter housing on most 472's and 500's point the filter away from the engine and can cause problems. The fix on this was to use the 425 filter housing which tucks the filter in closer. When using this one, the filter will be ok, worst case is to use the small chev filter. Third option is the remote filter.

Da-Burb...thanks for the info on that. Even with all I've looked at, I never read about that.
racedvl, not yet, still need to install the gaskets that 68sub just pointed out..need them desparatly. Plus I need to take one of the motor mount towers in to work and get it trimmed...getting closer though. |

This caddy engine swap must be the in thing to do. I went and looked at a 72 longhorn on Saturday popped the hood and there it was a big ass 500 caddy motor. Looked like a pretty clean install . The only cutting it looked liked he did was at the cross member for the oil filter. Unfortunatly I couldnt come up with the $800 dollars quick enough to snag it.

I see you have clearance for the filter, but will it scew on and off?
A little BFH on the firewall ought to give you some room there. Keep us posted. This is very interesting to me. 500!!! HEE HEE HEE HEE

As it was sitting in there like that, I was able to spin it off and on no problem.
I agree on doing somethign differant, one of the reasons I'm doing it. |

I am sure you know it, but just in case....there are several suppliers specializing in Cadillac engine build ups, and they have useful tips as well, such as use ARP rod bolts from a 401 AMC to strengthen bottom end, and the difference between the filter housings, and difference between Eldo oil pans and deville models. Also, I used a nice "warm" cam in my 472 buildup. As you likely also know, edelbrock makes a performer intake that works wonders. I am thinking of the name of the supplier, the one I used was the I believe to be the now defunct "Cadillac Motorsports development", but another has sprung up in its place, but the name escapes me.
I am struggling to remember more, I built my cad engine when I was still in high school, so it was a while ago....

Dont rev that thing passed 4500 rpm or it will have the same fate as the old pass creek jumping caddy my friend and i had, never seen a connecting rod come through a fender before

thanks for the info guys, I'm doing this on a burger and frys buget...actually, INSTEAD of burger and frys...
There will be no speed goodies on this pig for quite a while, I have some heads here that will breath better and bump up the compression one point, but that will be later after I can spend some $$ on it. That intake will cost $250, so it too is not in the near future. If there is problems at 4500 RPM, it's a turd motor. Red line for a stock caddy engine is 5000, and the main weak point before connecting rods is rocker retainers. |
