Hi folks! I'm from S.W. Ontario- the land of road salt and rusted vehicles.

I have a '79 Chev Scottsdale 3/4 ton with full-time 4x4. (click on my username to see a pic) The truck runs and drives perfect but the body is shot!! (again)

I have found and purchased a perfect box, but still need to replace the cab. (yes, the whole cab is shot...I have been patching it for a while now, but I am now patching onto patches!! lol)
I have heard from a couple of people that you can take an '81-87 cab, remove the vent cowling in front of the windshield and use them on a '73-80 truck.

Is there any truth to this? How much extra work is it? If it is easy, it would make it much easier to find a cab for the '79!! Also, how much work is involved to change a 2WD cab to fit a 4WD truck?

You will need to swap out the wiper linkage. You will prolly want to cap the hinge holes in the cowl that are used for 81-87 to prevent a water leakage. Use cab mounts to match the frame. You might get lucky if the new cab is 83 and older and not have to swap out wiring harnesses.

The trans tunnels are different between 2wd and 4wd. The 4wd tunnel cover can be made to approximately fit the 2wd tunnel, the fit is not exact.

farmall,sorry didnt read your whole post,i just changed a 2wd cab to 4wd cab.i didn't look close enough at first and all i did was cut out the tranny hump and painted cab bottom,BUT you have to cut out back under seat too so you clear transfer case,that piece in your 4 wd cab is actually an insert spot welded in,i just cut out around it,removed old metal etc and then installed in new cab.hope pic's explain better..it came out fitting nicely,,i'm not even close to being a body man but was able to do it...hope that help's some.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies!! Great info too. Sorry I didn't notice Crosby's post earlier. US111, thanks for the pics- looks like a job well done!
This is all good news to me- it will be alot easier to find a cab. I'm not too concerned about swapping electrical, etc, I am a Farm Equipment mechanic so I am not afraid of tackling anything out of the ordinary.

I am looking forward to doing some more reading on here- this is a nice forum. Thanks so much,

I've got this picture posting thing figured out... pretty easy!

here's a pic of my truck...about 10 years ago...it still looks the same, except with lots of "speed holes"..hehe. It's got over 500,000 km on it and the drivetrain is still original, and in good running order. It has NEVER let me down. It spent from '79 to '92 pushing snow in winter and in summer pulling a heavy trailer with a ditching machine, and also a boat. I bought it in '92 from my uncle and I use it as a daily driver and for hauling around my antique IH tractors to shows and tractor pulls. Hope you like it..it's a beast!
