Heater wont close off
I have a '71 c10. The heater don't want to shut off. When on the highway it gets pretty hot in the cab.
Is there a seal that needs replaced or should I just put a shutoff valve on the heater core? ------------------ Rod Childers '71 C10 Stepside

Napa sells a nice manual valve that fits in the heater hose. I have always used them because most factory valves with any age to them will not shut off 100%.

There is a heater valve on the inner fender, passenger side. One of the water heater hose connects to this before continueing on to the heater core. This #$%@ thing is expensive for what you get, $30.00. This valve becomes corroted by water. I have to replace mine every two years.

I just checked my chasis manual, seems like only the models with ac have a shutoff for the core. I was hoping that there was a vent/damper not sealing properly.

I had a truck that always pushed hot air out the vents,always stayed on blowing a little,my quick fix was unplug wire in summer,hook back when cold.Sounds like your flapper door might not be shutting all the way,maybe a cable adjustment?

you can buy those heater valves in a hard type plastic and i have had on on my car now for about 7 yrs now....still looks the same and no problems since i replaced it...i just went to auto parts house and asked to see an asortment of heater valves and picked the one i liked...just my 2 cents.......jv

i just bypass the heater core in the summer, i'm too cheap i guess!! LOL

Well, make sure the cable that passes thru
that little plastic plug/cap from the inside of the cab (under the glovebox area) is still connected to the flapper door that is suppose to seal the air off from the heater core. If the truck has been parked under leaves and crap...it gets in there and actually can keep that door/flapper from closing all the way. I just rebuilt my heater core box/assm and was amazed by how much junk can get in there. its really hard to clean out good without taking the box off the truck. I really need to get a digital camera...I would upload some pics of it. I had all the inside metal pieces powdercoated...and it looks super nice now. Gonna have to wait at least another year to add a/c..:-( What started out as a simple motor change has turned into a frame off full blown resto! Goodluck.
