Question Swapping my cam!

Hi guy's, I'm swapping my cam in an 82 350. I've done this before but it was a complete overhaul at that time and I can't remember all the proper procedures, which is why I'm here!!

I already have the engine out, heads and intake removed, lifters removed water pump is off, but the harmonic balancer is still on. Do I NEED a puller to remove the balancer to get the timing cover off??

Also, what is the proper procedure for installing the balancer?

All help is much appreciated!!!!!!

Thanx!

Yes you definitely do have to have a puller! Don't try to pry or beat it off...hehe But seriously the proper way or at least the way I re-install it is to take a block of wood and place over balancer and tap the wood to drive the balancer back on. If you have an Auto Zone nearby they have a rent a tool program. Which means you buy the tool and after done if its in ok condition they give you your money back..I do it all the time.

Thanks Gene and bigvinnie, help is much appreciated!!

Now for the serious question. How do you know if you have spun a bearing? I ask this because when I removed my camshaft and lifters, I first noticed that there were two lifters that were extremely pounded out. Then I inspected my cam only to find that the final lobe of the cam (#8 exhaust i think) is, well.....GONE!

#6 intake if i'm correct is half gone as well. Now all the steel that has come off the cam is obviously in the block, what are the chances that i could have a spun bearing and what are some symptoms?

Thanks again for your help!!
