700R4 column P R N OD 3 2 1 indicator

I switched to a 700R4 from TH350. Does any know what gear shift lens work with our non-tilt columns that has the P R N OD 3 2 1?

frank,
i have just finished doing the same thing. i too am looking for the 4 sp. indicator. i think i have found one in my rb's catalog. for $20. they are local here in the phx. area. it shows 1 2 3 d . not the od, but this will work for me. i think they have a web site that you can check out.

hope this helps.

truckandcarshop dot com has some. I don't know if they work with non-tilt though. You can only order a catalog online, no ordering. They may have a tech line though.

There is a board member that sells them. His name is onebad or badone or something like that. He is in Arizona or Nevada I think.

How was the swap? Was it easy? What all did it take? Where did you get the transmition? How is it now? We need to have an AusTex meet so I can see all of the local board members rides and we can all swap ideas and see eachothers trucks.

I think gonebad2 is the one that had them, but not positive.

It's a long saga of high and low points :0) Took about a month. This truck is my daily driver.

First

When I bought the truck way back when it had the V8 in 6 cylinder
position. This moves the engine about 3.5 inches back. With a short tail TH350 and a crossmember from god knows what that was bolted on under the frame.

So I gathered the correct V8 frame mounts and crossmember. Bought a used 1988 700R4 from a TPI car with 88K miles.

Then pulled the motor and tranny and installed the V8 frame mounts. Attached the 700R4 to the motor and installed with correct crossmember. Because I used the V8 frame mounts I did not have to cut the drive shaft so now the motor sits 3 inchs more forward. I only had to drill 2 holes in the frame for the crossmember to bolt up.

If you have a long shaft TH350 (9 inch) I dont think you have to cut the drive shaft. Just move the crossmember back.

The above went great.

Then

The 700R4 lost OD then shortly there after reverse.

Pulled the tranny for a rebuild. The tranny guy said the trans had a mix of parts. He rebuilt it. I installed it again. It did shift good but the tranny guy messed something up in the valve body.

So the tranny guy built a new 700R4 and converter and I gave him my old set up back.

Installed for the 3rd time.

So now it shifts great. Has HD parts in with the corvette servos and 1800-stall converter. Chirps the tires in second. I have the converter lock up/out controlled with a vacuum switch and with brake switch. I still have to install the speed controller that will only allow converter lock-up above 30 mph. The converter locks up in 2nd 3rd and 4th when the engine vacuum is high or if i'm not applying the brakes.

Results

70 mph 1800RPM

18.5 mpg at 70 with ac on. Getting 16.5 mpg on work loop. I was down at 12 mpg for awhile.

The low first gear is great too.

What rear gears are you running? and what size tires? With my 700r4 and 3.73's with 29 inch tall tires, I'm running 2100 RPM at 70 and only getting a best of 15-16 mpg.

Hey Frank, you might be able to run 87 octane if you swap down to a 180* stat. That little bit really makes a difference.

I was having trouble with 93 octane knocking on me in my "toy" car and I went from 180* to 160*. Problem solved! I know this is a little extreme on the temp, but the engine seems to like it and I don't notice any other ill effects. It's certainly not computer controlled, so no worries there.

Frank, Check with Shiftworks or Classic Industries. I think both have the OD shift plates. I have one for my convertible that also converts the gates on the stirrup shifter. Nice to see you around! Ever once in awhile I see your truck on 183. One of the drawbacks of a late model truck is nobody notices you!

Re: 700R4 column P R N OD 3 2 1 indicator

I was the one selling them. I sell them on ebay and they bring a stupid amount of money for a piece of plastic. They are only available for tilt columns right now. I'm going to contact they guy that makes them and see if it's possible to have some made for non-tilt columns. When I talk to him, I'll get some for tilt columns. I sell them to board members for $10.00 plus shipping. If they guy can't make the ones for non-tilt columns, the company my wife works for can....Maybe I'll ask her to see what she can do.

Mike,
I seen your truck one Craig's list. I already checked with Shiftworks and their lens is to short. The local First Gen Firebird club has been meeting at the Home Depot on 1431 and pamer. Some really nice cars and trucks come out. Saturdays around 7:00PM

Gonebad2. Put me in line for on too.

Gonebad2 put me down for one also, right now I do not have a tilt installed. I have a tilt that needs to be rebuilt so I could use one of each.
