Peroxide as rust remover?

I just heard on the radio that hydrogen peroxide will remove rust from chrome parts. Anyone else heard of or tried this?

Hmmm I will have to give that a try. and if the 2% off the shelf dont do it then I am sure the 30% we have at work will do the trick. LOL

Re: Peroxide as rust remover?

It's a serious oxidizer. Not sure an oxidizer would be a good thing to put on there, but who knows. Definately get all of it off when your done. Coke is supposed to be very good on chrome.

Re: Peroxide as rust remover?

I use a great product for de-rusting stuff called DEOX-C, it comes as a powder that you mix with water, you soak the part in it overnight and it comes out clean, it works even better if you can keep it warm maybe with something like a fishtank heater and take the worst of the loose rust of first with a wire brush. Its non-toxic, non corrosive (you can shove a bare hand in it with no problems) and works really well. After a couple of goes it turns black and is exhausted and has to be chucked away and you just mix up a fresh batch.

This shows a metal shutter from my house in France that we treated with this, Green is after painting, the middle is bare metal and the right is how it looked before it soaked overnight. This was very heavy rust from years of sitting outside with no paint on and it looked like new clean metal. www.bilthamber.co.uk for contact details.

LOL no kidding, We had a guy at the last place I worked use some Kim-wipes ( kind a like giant klenex) and 30% and threw them in the reg trash when he was done. needles to say after a short time there was smoke coming out of the can. LOL

I dont think I would even try to use the good stuff anywhere but work.

Re: Peroxide as rust remover?

Yeah, we used it as a reagent for some of our analysis when I was in the Navy.

Re: Peroxide as rust remover?

Dont use those scrubbing pads on the back of some sponges, or the green scrub pads, those dont clean chrome like an SOS pad, they scratch the hell out of the chrome.

Re: Peroxide as rust remover?

Don't know if they have a US distributor, there is an email address on that page and fax number, may be worth dropping them a line to see if they have a deal in the USA yet, they're nice friendly people.
