any one know how to paint fiberglass?

i have that 92 bmw k75, and it is in deerate need of a paint job, before i pay some one to paint it, i wanted to attempt it my self, any pointers on how to prep the fiber glass? also if i needed to make a fiberglass repair, would i just use some bondo or putty or something? any advise will be appreciated.

Is it fiberglass or urethane plastic like the bumper covers on cars?

thats a good question. i wish i knew, i think i am going to sand it down somw with like 400 grit, and then just paint it, we will see how it turns out.

JMAC - They've been painting Corvette fiberglass bodys for years...seems to work pretty well.

I was told it in reference to an old fiberglass boat I had in H.S. Must be different stuff...

I had a 72 vette that I painted and it turned out well. Painting fiberglass is not much different than painting metal, with a few exceptions. If there is any damage you must repair it with a fiberglass kit to restore the strength to the part. After you have repaired the part you will have to put a skim coat of bondo over the repair to make it slick because fiberglass will not sand out smooth. After repairs are made your have to seal it with with gelcoat or epoxie primer or the repairs will show thru the paint. There are many books out there on how to paint corvettes that have all the steps in them,so an hour in a bookstore before you start would be a good idea.

I had a K100 that I painted. It was Kondor primer and Ditzler Uathane. just sand it smooth with 400, and reprimer till it's flat. Then shoot your color

We do fiberglass street rod stuff all of the time. Working with glass is pretty easy, really. If parts are damaged, the edges must be feathered out and you have to fill with more glass. Then you do your filling/sanding/blocking just as you normally would. An epoxy primer would be the best and a sealer before you paint wouldn't hurt either. Just my 2 cents.

If it is cracked through and you can get to the back side clean it real well with soap and water and dry real well, hair dryer works. Get a fiberglass repair kit (just resin no kitty hair) fiberglass mat (lays out easier), fiberglass cloth if its in a high stress area and a cheap natural bristle brush like a chip brush. If the crack doesn't end at a hole drill a small hole 1/8" at the end of the crack to relieve stress, line the crack up and tape with masking tape to keep resin from flowing thru. Rough up the back side, cut mat and cloth to fit area, mix up resin and hardner and brush on a coat then push the mat into it adding more fiberglass so the mat is completly coated. You don't want any air bubbles it will make it weak. Lay the cloth on it and coat it the same way as you did the mat. When it is cured pull the tape off and you will have very little prep work on the outside. This works also on hard type plastics also like ABS. Good luck.
