Help Identify GMC
I just the truck pictured below and I know very little about it or GMs in general.
What I know (I think) It is a 69 GMC It has a 350 engine It has rusted out trailing arms It has no brakes It has an automatic transmision I come from a long line of Ford people and this truck was my wifes grandfather's, and he passed awy last year. Nobody in the family really knows much about it and I know even less. It is not at my house yet and I am going to get the model # when I can. The fender badges are wrong I have been told. They say GMC 920. Any info that you experts can give me from the picture below would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Trevor, I still say you got a steal for what you paid.
That does apear to be a 69 or 70. It had the right grill and trim for it. It also looks like it is a 3/4 ton. Welcome to the addiction. |

I am not sure what year your truck is but I do know we live in the same neighbourhood ..... I live in Ajax and I bought a 70 GMC pickup from Bills Truck shop (www.billstruckshop.com) this past spring. Check out Bill's website and give him a call. He has really been a big help to me, is a super nice guy and is very knowledgable about old chevy/gmc trucks.

In Canada, wasn't a 3/4 ton called a 920? And it does appear to be a 3/4 (with split rims-- ).

The badges belong on that truck, 920 denotes a Canadian-built 3/4 ton. 910 = 1/2 ton. That was the last year they used those badges, 1970 (like mine) and up say GMC 1500, 2500 etc.
Look for a number stamped on the pad on the front passenger face of the block. It should have a few letters at the end called a "suffix code" and you can find out if its the original motor at this site: http://nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html Its very likely that Oshawa is the home town of that truck. Keep that truck alive, it looks like it has potential and we have VERY FEW members living in Ontario! I know the climate thereabouts is very unkind to vehicles.

Split Rims ???
What do you mean by split rims??
I ahve heard of this term for dump trucks and other large rims but I didn't know that there was small split rims. Or are you talking about something else?

They're an outdated style of HD rim--a type of two-piece wheel that uses a rim to hold the bead on, and that rim is not a complete circle (you can see the split if you look).
They have an awful reputation for maiming people who mount them incorrectly. When the bead tries to seat, the rims can come flying off at such a velocity that limbs, etc. don't have a chance. My suggestion is to look for modern one-piece 16" wheels. I had the same ones on my '72 GMC 2500:
