3/4 Ton, Spicer Hub, Allen Bolt Washer

For my '72 3/4 ton, 4x4 K20 front D44 Spicer Hubs, I need the little, thick washers for the allen bolts that hold the locking hub to the wheel hub. Hardware store washers have too large O.D. The local dealer says the washers were once available separate from the allen bolts, but have been discontinued since '94. GM part number:

3979606

Not available in my local wrecking yards. Up here, 3/4 tons either don't get wrecked or the 3/4 ton axles are swapped onto another truck. I'm trying to avoid canibalizing my '71 K20 burb or turning down (lathe) some washers.

What have you folks done?

Either try some of the other dealers (to see if they may have it in stock) or have a machine shop make what you need.

If you know the size inner & outer then call Tacoma Screw. They should have it and the call is toll free.

I bought stainless bolts and washers for both of my K20s, but I can't seem to remember where I got them. They were identical to the originals just stainless. I'll keep thinking.......

Re: 3/4 Ton, Spicer Hub, Allen Bolt Washer

You may be in luck......sometime ago I swapped over to MM hub's and may still have the old spicer equipment buried in my garage somewhere.
I'm at work now and will check when I can.

Thanks. That's very kind of you. But I don't need something sent to me. I can resize some washers, if need be. I posted to see whether there is a simple solution such as an overlooked parts source.

Appreciate the thought, though.

I googled the GM part # prior to starting this thread. Guess I need to improve my search skills. I'll give it another try.

Question 'Nutha "Allen Bolt" Spicer Locking Hub Question...

Spicer hub gaskets:
When I removed my pickup's Spicers, there were no gaskets. Just silicone. Auto parts stores (NAPA, Carquest) had no listing on computer or in books.

So, I called the local dealer on what gaskets GM calls for on these Spicer hubs. Parts said they take metal gaskets that cost $10 EACH special order:
3979441

Is that correct? Do both sides of the extention housing call for metal gaskets? The extention housing is the cylindrical body that goes between the wheel hub and the chrome Spicer dial housing.

I have some gasket paper ($1.32 ), but I would like to eventually use metal gaskets where called for since they would withstand the torque and twisting better than paper just as the rear FF axle metal gaskets do. I also think metal gaskets with Gasgacinch would seal better.

Thanks for all the help on this thread. I've just about got Spicer's down. Disassmbled them today using the Chevy Service Manual.

Re: 3/4 Ton, Spicer Hub, Allen Bolt Washer

Metal gasket is $8.53 and paper is $2.13 at the dealer.
Metal to the axle side and paper to the chrome hub side.

Re: 3/4 Ton, Spicer Hub, Allen Bolt Washer

Thanks, again, Nu2-72. Both my 3/4 ton K20s came with no gaskets, so I've never known if they should have metal and I hadn't had to regrease them till now.

That IPB helps, too. But, did you notice that the two gaskets don't say whether they are metal or paper? And the cap paper gasket, as depicted, looks just as thick as the metal gasket.

Re: 3/4 Ton, Spicer Hub, Allen Bolt Washer

You are correct, they do not say what the materials are. But I know from tearing mine down and I have purchased several of each. I believe the purpose of each is that the metal gasket is between two solid steel parts and will compress enough to seal. The paper gasket is between the steel spacer and the potmetal Chrome hub. The hub has cutouts in the rear and paper will seal better on a non flat or irregular surface.
I am in the process of building my 72 K-20 with NOS parts. Took a while to locate some things so I put together these lists. Helped me alot. You will just have to trust me here.
If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.
