Motor mount question
When doing a V8 swap into a 64 originally equipped with an inline 6, what motor mounts are to be used? If I recall from reading past posts the originals can be used but need to be moved forward to allow firewall clearance for the distributor? Could this be fixed by using a smaller cap and keeping the original position? I am about to pull the 350 out of my 75 Jimmy and put in my 64 C10 and just want to make sure everything is set first.

Re: Motor mount question
The 6 cylinder mounts work fine for the V8, in fact they used the same frame mounts in the same position for the six and V8 up until 67 or 68 when they started moving the V8 closer to the front. The point distributor and some aftermarket units will usually clear with no problem, but the GM HEI might hit the firewall, especially if the rear of the engine sets lower than factory. If you're keeping a manual transmission then it's much easier to use the original bellhousing that bolts to the crossmember, since it bolts right up to the V8. The manual flywheel from the six will work on the 350, just don't forget to install a pilot bushing in the crankshaft. I have used HEI distributors with the engine in the original location; I just used a block of wood with a big hammer to make an indention on the firewall to clear the dist cap. I wouldn't reccomend that for a show truck, but if you take your time you can make it look nice enough for a daily driver. If you're going with an automatic and putting a new rear crossmember, then it's probably easier to drill some new holes for the stands and move the engine forward a few inches. That would give you more clearance at the back of the engine and put the fan a little closer to the radiator. Hope that helps.
