rear end swap options

what rear ends will swap out into my 70' 1/2 ton?

i wanted to go to the junk yard and but another rear end, with some 3.08's or something. i have the wide (71-72) housing, so if there are any rear ends with 5 lug axles and backing plates i could use that would be a plus, just looking for a 12 that i can take the guts out of and put in my housing, what 12 bolt rear ends can i use? or does any one have a rear end with some 3.08's for sale?

thanks
tommie

Re: rear end swap options

I have a 71-72 5 lug rear end with 3.08's in it that worked fine under my truck before I put the 3.73 posi in it. Id take 300 for it.

Re: rear end swap options

Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a new ring and pinion than completley swap out rear ends? I'm asking because I don't know, but I do know it's a pretty significant job to replace the entire rear...axle and everything.

Re: rear end swap options

The cost of the new ring and pinion along with having it setup if your not familiar will cost more than a junkyard. Down side of junkyard is not sure what you are getting and you should put new bearings and seals in it before you use it. A complete rear end swap is an easy weekend job.
A ring and pinion is a weekend job also if you know what you are doing.
