How do I replace the tranny gasket on a TH350 on my 1973 C20. It seems that there is a crossmemeber in the way. I can't get to all the bolts on the pan. What do I need to do?

You'll need to jack up the tranny and unbolt the crossmember and tranny mount. Easiest way to jack it up without getting in the way is to jack up the tailhousing.

i changed mine and dont remember ever having to jack up the trans.. of course mine is an 82 c10... dont think that should make a difference though.

I used a 1/4 drive socket and a swivel on mine. I did not have to do jack up the trans.

I think production tolerances must have been a bit squirrelly back then, because my '79 Sub requires jacking up the trans to get to a couple of the rear pan bolts. Luck of the draw, I guess.

With my 700, it is impossibe to take the rear bolts out without taking the cross-member out. Of course I have a deep pan and allen head bolts.

Tyler,

when I had my stock 700R4 crossmember in my truck, I had to jack up the tranny to remove the pan. Either that or take the stock y-pipe loose so I could gain enough room to get it off. I quickly tired of that junk and notched the crossmember lip a tad so it would drop down without having to remove anything. I could reach the rear bolts without removing anything but couldn't get the pan off. Sometimes I wonder what the engineers are thinking when they design this stuff.

On my '87 with a 700r4 i also notched the crossmember lip the length of the pan and i also wacked off the two little tabs on the tranny oil pan and i have no problem at all i can remove & install the bolts and remove & install the pan with the cross member in place.

Im not shure if the TH350 truck cross members can be notched the way i did mine but if it can i know i wouldn't think twice about doing it.

The cross members on these trucks are way over engineered and a lot of material can be removed without weaking them.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all of the replys. I think I am going to notch the lip of the crossmember. This will make it easier to get to. Lots of steel left on the crossmember after I notch it out.
