Having problems with my motor starting and staying running again?

I am having problems with starting the motor and keeping it running in my truck. Like when I go to start it, it acts like it does not want to turn over at all. My lights go somewhat dimmer then usual but not all that dim. I checked the battery and it seems to be fine. I put a new starter on there like a month ago. I was having problems with it staying running, fixed that by pulling of the carb and swapping it with another 1 I had laying around. I replaced the fuel filter and it seemed a little dirty but not bad. I had replaced the fuel pump like 6 months ago so I don't think thats a problem. I am open to any suggestions whether it might be something simple I can't think of or something I don't know about.I am hoping its something simple. Thanx for any comments.

Timing sounds like its too far advanced. Retard it a little and see what happens . Frank

Sounds like your ground strap, Check the ground going to your engine.

Yep! thats what i was gonna suggest.

Also check your battery cables they can look fine but be corroded internally and cause high resistance.

Also check the wiring at the dist. and coil for poor connections

Re: Having problems with my motor starting and staying running again?

I checked out the battery cables and they seemed good, but I quess if nothing else works I could just go get new ones. I checked all the grounds and they seemed to be all fine. Did not check the wiring at the distributar and coil connections yet though. Thanx for the suggestions and keep them coming!!

Re: Having problems with my motor starting and staying running again?

Hi, How long has it been since you did a good tune up on it? , check for vacumn leaks ,like around carb base plate, vac leaks can cause it to not run good. as for the starter problem ,do a draw test on battery an check all connections ,clean an tight , also take a good look at your dist cap inside of it for cracks or burns . good luck Slim
