At the risk of sounding dum, how do you identify the transfer case modle?

The Spicer 20 and NP205 were both pretty common. I know the Spicer has stampings on the rear of the case, because mine has them. There was also a heavy-duty Rockwell case from what I understand.

Spicer model 20s were only used in Blazers, not pickups.

It is a Frankenstein truck, c10 with c20 running gear. origionally short bed with long, ect. ect. ect. It has a 350 crate with chrome valve covers that I want to get rid of and replace with stock chevy ones if anyone is interested.

Well, that would be a start of confusion there...

What year C10? I thought they were all 2wd? (although I've heard some of the early K's were called C's)

The P.O. turned it into a c20. It is a 68, I have no idea what year the running gear is out of, and that is where my confusion begins. I can't figure out what gear the transfer is in, there is no shift pattern on the shifter except for a picture of 4 tires and a drive train. The 205 and 208 have completely different gear positions. I have a severe vibration at 45mph that seems to be coming from the drive train.

I swear will never buy a another truck off ebay again!

Yes, he cut out the bosses on the rear frame for the trailing arms and welded in new ones for leafs ect. I'll snap some pics today

Definately gonna need some pics. The factory 68s could either have a rockwell 221 or a new process 205.

Thats a dana 20 aint it....so there's Rockwell T221, NP 205 and Dana 20.. thats all I can figure these came with. I've seen 69 with either Rockwell or NP...never seen a 68 yet myself.

If the shift knob came from the same place as the t-case I would guess it is a Full Time NP203. though it may have been converted to part time as well.

It has locking hubs and when I put it all the way forward, I can really feel and hear the difference, I can't drive it over 45, the vibration is too horrific, scared the bjesus out of my wife yesterday on the freeway.

Looks like the 203, actually it is a dead ringer. I havent figured out how to add photos yet, but now I must figure out why it is vibrating like a san francisco earthquake.

After following the link on the page, i noticed that the hubs on my truck match the jc whitney conversion kit hubs. What does that mean to me? Is it a 4wd still and will the shift pattern be different? anyone ever do this conversion?

Well, if the t-case were converted, you would have a part time NP203. Should say 2wd on the shifter.

What no Brownie Points?

It has been a while since I messed with a FT 203 but I believe after a conversion you will have 2wd hi and 2wd lo in the standard positions and hi loc is 4wd hi, lo loc is 4wd lo. As for the vibration I would check your u-joints for wear and make sure the u-joints are "in phase" which is aligned with each other, this applys to the front and rear shafts. Also the cardigan joint in the front driveshaft may be worn. I supect that all the way forward is 4wd hi or lo and you are getting the vibration from the front shaft spinning unloaded with the hubs unlocked.

The vibration continues after I shift into neutral while driving at speed, no change, so I wonder if there is a bad wheel berring or somthing. I'll take a look at the u joints and is there anyone out there that can give me a clue on how to post a picture ..."posting for dummies"

Maybe its an out of balanced tire or the tires themselves.

to attach pics from your hard drive, click new reply, then scoll down a bit until you see Attach Files, and click on Manage attachements.. another window will open, where you can browse your hard drive and attach pics.. If they are too large you may have to reside them for it to work.. and it is recommended that you keeped them smaller, it makes it hard on those of us who still have dial up.

4wd Hi is with the shifter pulled closest to the seat, then 2wd Hi is forward 1 notch, then neutral, then 4wd Lo closest to the dash. You can test to see if the 203 has been converted to part time by putting it in the 2wd Hi position and unlocking the front hubs....if it will move in drive it is part time, if it just sits still and spins the front drive shaft it is still full time. If it's still full time you will have to leave the xfer in the 4wd Hi position or lock the front hubs. Went thru this with my 67 4wd that somebody swapped to a 203, I converted it to part time myself, it was pretty easy with the Mile Marker kit. Greg
