Disc brake swap brake line ???

I am going to do the disc brake swap from ~73 model truck. For all you guys who have done this, what did you do for brake lines? The ones on the donor truck are nowhere close to the ones on my 70. I have a 72 I could use the lines off of that I was planning on using the m/c and prop valve. Will the 72 lines work?

Re: Disc brake swap brake line ???

I used a 1975 GMC disc setup on my 70 and had a friend bend up some new ones...they look like total crap. You can bend some new ones to fit, but spend the time to make them at least somewhat resemble original, not just snake them all over. You mention having a 72 parts truck, you could just use everything (from xmember to lines) from the 72. It is what I wished I had done.

Re: Disc brake swap brake line ???

I just spent some considerable time and money doing the Disc swap on my K5. For the hard lines I went to the auto parts store and bought generic lines and bent them up similar to OEM, and bought adapters for the different size fittings as needed. It's not the same as original (won't be since it's disc now anyway) but you can get pretty close if you plan it out. I replaced all the hard lines and hoses on the truck save for the hard line that runs from the front to the rear. I spent maybe $50 on all the lines and adapters, and bought fancy custom braided hoses for $90.

Re: Disc brake swap brake line ???

When I swapped the running gear out of the 72 donor truck I was planning on using the original brake lines but they were pretty beat up. I did what
69TowRig id and bent up my own lines all the way through but I also got all new fittings from Summit Racing. I think I spent about 65 bucks all together including the "cheaper" one use tools. Use your original lines from the 72 as a guide and all should go well. Might have to include a little cursing too.

Re: Disc brake swap brake line ???

Krue,

Board member Matt67350 has sone this several times.

He uses the complete late model lines on the early truck. They may look completely different than you're used to, but they install okay. It mounts the proportioning valve down by the bottom of the radiator, just like the 73 and newer trucks used. He says the lines lay right into place on the early trucks. You may have to drill a hole or two, but no line bending or modifying. He also uses late model brake hoses too.

His stuff always looks good, without any hokey looking bent up lines.

Do you know which prop valve he uses? The 71/2 or the later? Thanks.

I used the one for the 78 trucks. 1/2 ton 2wd long or short bed will work.
The lines from any 2wd 73-87 truck or Surb will work.

At the junk yard, pull all the brake lines up front. Get all the brackets and bolts too. From the prop valve, find the brake line that go to the rear. Just under the cab on the passanger side, there is a fitting. Just undo it or cut the line past the fitting. (I cut it past the fitting) Then when you go to set the lines in the 67-72 truck you have all the parts you need. I can't tell you enough to get all the hardware. Get it all, brake hoses, brake lines, cheap nut that holds the brake hose to the frame, bolts for the the prop valve, lines to the M/C. You may have to drill holes in the upper control arms, but it's not that hard. Double Flare tool is needed also.

Makes a great upgrade and it's cheap.

Re: Disc brake swap brake line ???

I think Inlinetube.com sells disc conversion lines as well as all the stock lines.

Thanks. I went one better, I have the whole freaking truck in my back yard.
My brother got it in trade as a parts truck. All he wants is the bed and rear end out from under it. So I can get what I need, I just needed to know what I need.
