69... Small Back Window???
a friend of mine just bought a 69 c-10 short bed stepside... theres a few things on it that i'm not sure about. first off is the small back window. didn't the small back window only come on the 67's early 68's? what is the correct set of gauge cluster? i own a 70 and i have the 5 gauge's but his came with the 3 gauge's with the signal lights in the middle were the tach should be and last but not least what year was the column hand brake used in again i own the 70 and mine is the pedal not the column lever. the body tag on the inside door gives the 9 as the fifth number which should signify it as a 69 right.....? the hood is off of a gmc and the front fenders are replacements so it's hard to tell from the outside. a little help please.... thanks benito

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
The cab came from a 67 or 68 with the small back window option, they just removed the original VIN tag and put the 69's VIN tag in it's place. That also explains why it has the hand operated park lever, because all 67-68's had it.

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
the small back window was discontinued in late 67.not sure on the guage cluster. 67-68 had the hand lever parking brake 69 parking brake moved to the kick panel, foot operated. mike

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
Not sure about the vin etc but 67 and 68 have a emergency brake handle that pulls out from under the steering column. To tell a 67 from a 68 , if it has the orginal doors, the vent windows will NOT have locks on them. On most 67/68 have a choke pull on the dash. The 3 gauge is the standard dash.To tell the frame 67 don't have a dimple where the steering box mounts( for P/S box) also i have seen a few 68 without also.
To be honest with the parts swapping ability of the 67-72 it takes some work to figure out what year parts make up the truck. Find the vin on the frame and match it up to the vin on the cab but with rivets being easy to buy, it just eans that the vin tag matches the frame! Good luck Steve |

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
As said above, somoebody may've had changed the cab with a '67 cab and put the '69 vin on it.

That may apply to the C-10/C-20/C-30 models I've seen a couple of later models '69 and up C-40/C50 with the small back window, so manufacturing trucks with the small window cab didn't necesarily stopped in '67, in bigger trucks anyways Welcome to the board mike nutt

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
That is correct Paul, the small window was used through 72 on the bigger trucks.
there should be no 68 trucks with small windows, there's been some sightings, but no one has ever been able to prove anything. This 68 is defenatly a 67 cab. The ignition switch and lighter are probably odd looking too aren't they? Also notice the lack of a place in the doorjambs for dome light switches, and the fuse box is mounted sideways. |

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
so the cab is a 67' and i did notice that the wing windows have an extra lever on it is that the lock???? i haven't got a chance to check the truck out all that close. when we picked it up it was already dark. i forget were the vin number is located on the cab besides the door tag, my truck is still in SC, getting fixed... (one year later). but anyways shouldn't the vin on the cab match the body tag some what? i'm trying to get as much info i can for my buddy and as soon as i can i'll post some pics of this odd thing. if the truck is registered as a 69' should we change it over to a 67' how does dmv classify a vehicle? by its cab or frame?

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
I also have a '69 with a small back window. I just installed a '67 cab this past weekend. Sideways mounted fuse panel, no switch location for interior light, etc....everything that was mentioned above. Moving the vin plate on the next visit out back.
Oh, and my '69 also came from the factory with the three-hole gauge cluster. Almost a "zero-option" truck back then. Now it has a crap load of options in place or pending.....

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
The guage cluster style you have are the idiot guages available for all years i believe. the cab is a 67 and as said before the vin was probably taken off the original cab.

Yes. The DMV classifies a vehicle by its cab or its frame. I have a "C" body mounted on a "K" frame. The person who did this went to the Wyoming equivalent of the DMV and said, "Look here. I built this truck. Here are the titles of the two vehicles I started with. Lets register it." In Wyoming the DMV guy looks at the vehicle, sees the obvious hubs sticking out, and says, "Lets go with the K VIN number. Here's your title." So he sells it to a lady. She legally transfers the title. Then she sells it to my friend and he legally transfers the title. All in Wyoming. 1994 rolls around and I want a truck. My friend says he wants something other than this 1970 cab mounted on a 1971 4x4 chassis. I say sold and we proceed to drag it 1000 miles to Minnesota. We go to the DMV here. The lady behind the counter just about craps on herself and starts thinking we are common car theives. Thankfully my friend kept the records. Some kind lady in the WY DMV sent us copies of all the titles registered for the two VIN numbers in their state. None of them turned up stolen. And I could point out to the DMV guy where the cab matched the "C" VIN and the frame matched the "K" frame. They finally re-issued me a MN VIN number, exactly the same as the "C" number. In MN they don't care that the truck is obviously a "K" truck. They only care what the VIN on the cab says. Even if you can't see the VIN unless you open the door. SOOOoooo To make a long story short. Call YOUR DMV and ask YOUR DMV what they want.

Re: 69... Small Back Window???
for those of us in MN, the DMV can be an awful experience... very picky with the issue... and i wouldnt doubt that its because the original bodies that came on the vehicles up here, didnt make it but a few years as they surrendered to the rust gods.. so alot of swappin n things... and they seem to be pickier about trucks over cars.. just my MN experience.. I have a "calico" 3/4 ton 4x with no title right now and i am dreading goin in to have one written up...
