Current rims ok for 35-36's?
I've got a set of 31's on my Blazer that desperately need replacing.
After doing the lift and whatnot on the truck it looks like a toy going down the road with rollerskate wheels on it. My Question: I currently have 15x10.5s for wheels on it. The track looks narrow. When I go to 35's-36's am I going to need to replace the rims with ones that have less backspacing to allow for the tread? or are my current rims going to be ok? I'd love to hear "no" as i can order the damn tires and not have to worry about the Extra 520.00 for wheels. But the truth will suffice too. |

I have always ran a least 10" wide wheels with 35's.

Re: Current rims ok for 35-36's?
I just scored a set of Mickey Thompson 36x 14.5x 15's
for 699.00 on Ebay. I was looking at getting off the cheap way from Desert Rat as they had 35's for 160.00 a tire for 35x12.5x15's..For 40 more dollars I got a hell of a lot more tire. |

Re: Current rims ok for 35-36's?
BTW,what bodystyle Blazer do you have?On the`73-up bodystyle 10" rims bring 12.50s out from under the body by an inch or two.On the 69-72s they just fit, unless you have some big side-lugs like Swampers.Another BTW,what rims do you have and what backspace? Now that you`re going to 14.50s it might make a difference if the wheels have more than the usual backspace.Need more info.

Re: Current rims ok for 35-36's?
That was my original question actually.
I have an 82 K10 Blazer. The rims that are on it are stock replacement style rims with 31's I have no idea what backspacing they are. That was actually what my original question was asking. F*ck man, why do I have a feeling like I am about to be screwed? I measure backspace from the back face of the rim to the lip right? I already know the answer I think. |

Re: Current rims ok for 35-36's?
The backspacing is just enough so that the back of the drums are about flush with the lip.
Too far in aren't they? |

Re: Current rims ok for 35-36's?
A 10" wheel is fine for for most any tire even over 40" IMO. It is the section width that is more important than the height when choosing a size. 2 to 3" of buldge will give rim protection. Most of the guys running 12" or wider wheels are doing it just for looks. A wider wheel puts more strain on the wheel bearings and axle components. Most serious off roaders are using the narrowest wheel they can. A 7 1/2",8" or 9" wheel is common with tires up to 40" and a 14" width.
BTW most every 10" wheel I have seen has a 3 1/2 or 4" backspace. Unless you are going to order something custom that is what you will get.

Re: Current rims ok for 35-36's?
Correct you were.
I did not know this and thank you for the info. The rims I have do in fact have a 4" backspace. I ended up scoring a set of 35's and rims with a 3" backspace (8" wide) from a guy that lived down the road that was on Pirate4x4.com. Got a hell of a deal too.
