14-Bolt axle into 67-72 leaf: Shock Brackets
14-Bolt axle into 67-72 leaf: Shock Brackets:
As a novice welder and unsure of my direction on this, how can I determine the correct location for the axle housing shock mounts for replacement brackets. I was looking at my Eaton in my Longhorn (my only axle to compare with) and was looking at the centerline of the axle/pinion/flange end locations and it must be based upon these angles; as well as the upper shock mounts direction from the frame. What have you folks encountered, decided, and determined is a correct fix on this? I am having my 14-Bolt rebuilt, and will need to recolve this once mounted.... Thoughts...

Re: 14-Bolt axle into 67-72 leaf: Shock Brackets
I made a block that looks like a lift kit block after I determined the correct angle. The perches were cut off and also the shock mounts. I set the axle in some jack stands and leveled the axle housing side to side. Then leveled the housing using the casting fins. The center distances were set and then I used a level and square on the perches. When the block was level on top, the correct angle was set on the pad. Weld. I still have the block in the garage. I can get a pic tomorrow if you like.

Re: 14-Bolt axle into 67-72 leaf: Shock Brackets
Sure! Thanx!
I was thinking of installing the axle onto the leaf springs then setting the whole chassis down as mounted. A friend suggested having knowledge of the shocks' center to center mounted, if you will. He felt it is important to determine that so that the shock is not improperly collapsed/extended. My fate was that the previous guy who did all of this prior to my owning it welded the housing brackets wrong and thus caused the shock to bind in the pockets mounted and use finally broke the top shock pin location. On my Eaton, the pinion and carrier is offset vs. being straight down the middle; throwing me off a bit. I think it is just an optical illusion for me. How often is this changeover performed here and what is the results that can be shared?!!! Thanx!

Here is my block for pinion angle in a 14 bolt to 72 frame conversion.

Re: 14-Bolt axle into 67-72 leaf: Shock Brackets
Thanx!
Today was a good day for me; I scored an original DANA 60 out of a 1971 3/4 ton GMC! I even got the leaf springs and the shock bracket from the frame that I needed!!! I guess I will be dumping the 14-Bolt Corp Axle! Have no need for it now! Thanx for your help though on this!!!! In the second Image, while cleaning the axle, I found an inspection mark on the passenger's side tube housing-for those of us who like restoration details!
