th400 clutches slip temp fix ?
ok do you guys know of some way somehow that i could make worn clutch discs in a th400 grab just enough again to be able to move truck one last time or two ? maybe some type F fluid, or brake fluid ? i know brake fluid usually makes brake and clutch material grab real well, so hmmmm ?
i think reverse pack is ok but forward is whats burnt, its in the oil you can see smell it, so,, thanks for anything,. |

Yes, using type F tranny fluid would help the clutches hold one more time. Type F auto tranny fluid has a higher coeifficient of friction than the Dextron type that is specificied for GM trucks.
I have a 72 ford with an FMX tranny that uses Type F fluid. It is getting harder to find these days, but not impossibble. If the truck can't move forward with the burnt dextron fluid in it now, Type F is not going to magically make the truck move. If the tranny slips way too much, but finally grabs hold, you might buy a little time with type F If you don't mind paying a lot more per quart of transmission fluid, B&M has an enen higher coifficient of friction tranny fluid. It's called Trick Shift. Then again, it won't fix a f#$% tranny, but it's worth a shot. Last edited by Willy Prost; 08-27-2002 at 04:15 PM. |

lol @ 68, hehe, yeah il try and sell it for 50 bucks as a very easiy rebuildable th400, but of course no one will probably want to buy or trade aything for it, so itll end up in scrap shredder.... i hate to do that....
new fluid wont do anything, not when the clutch pack friction discs are fried and need replaced for the tranny to work again in forward direction, i guess il have to try brake fluid, thanks, |

my friends van tranny was slipping real bad, we changed the fluid and filter, now i have the van done like 8 smoke shows and the damn th400 works like new. Funny story my shop teacher told my class in a lecture NOT to change tranny fluid, because then the tranny would slip because all the gunk makes the bands grip. Gee just what i want a plugged filter and old fluid with crap in it. But it is the total oppisite usually the gunk is between the bands casuing to slip. SO maybe just try to change the fluid and filter because you never know...
