Engine "gulp"
Was driving the 72 from the airport last night when I noticed I was going about 72 mph. I really didn't want to be going that fast so I let off the gas a bit. My engine took like 2 big gulps or coughs or you might say misses. I've had this happen before when I was giving it the gas but never when Iwas letting off the gas.
Any ideas why? I do have an HEI and a 4bbl Q-jet. Thanks in advance. Pat

This only happens when you let off the gas? What about when you stomp it at a light or something? Does it hesitate or pop?

new69owner
Last night was the first time it happened when I let off the gas. But it has happened before when I am giving it gas.

I dont know if this is the same thing but my 72 started doing this. It would do it once in a great while and when it did it was only a quick sputter. I continued to drive it and over the course of the summer, it would sputter when you were not expecting it. Here about a month ago, we were heavily loaded with camper and trailer when it coughed and then let out the most ferocious back fire. I was thinking there may be moisture under the cap and in doing so noticed the cap was very corroded. I replaced the cap and runs like a top and have not had any hiccups since. Good luck

IGNITION!!!! Sounds like you need to inspect your cap, rotor, and points. You may have to haul out the feeler guage and dwel angle guage. Good luck.
