Rear exit Vs. Side Exit
Does it make a difference as far as performance/sound where the exhaust comes out?

if you enjoy exhaust noise more than music or conversation in your cab, side exhaust that exits in front of the rear tire is the only way to go...

Just switched my suburban exhaust from side (in front of the rear tires) to behind the rear tires. It makes a HUGE difference in interior noise, not to mention not annoying people who try to get into the back seat with the fumes blowing at their knees. I'd strongly recommned having the exhaust exit behind the rear tires. It cost a bit more for the extra pipe going over the rear axle, but it was worth it.

I'm Gonna have to agree with vinnie, i went from rear to side exit, and love it!!! the sound of the exhaust beats out anything else i could possibly wanna hear while driving...but, if you have a burb or something with 4 doors, then rear might be a little more practical for people getting in and out, but if you dont care about them, then do the side

Is it too loud to talk or hear music?

I like my side exit in front of the tire. It is a little loud on long cruises. However, I plan on installing an X-pipe which is supposed to add performance and mellow out the noise.

I originally planned on side exits, but later opted for rear duals swept to the side with 40 Series Flows and I absolutely love it! As of interior resonance, It's really easy to carry on a conversation and listen to some tunes without yelling unless you dont care about sound level I'd definatly go out behind the tires.

You see a lot of rear exit duals out on the road. However, I found out that with rear exit pipes, and a topper on your truck, if you open the top or side vent/windows on the topper, you will suck exhuast fumes in the back. Not good if the dog or kids are back there. Yea, it's a nit but some thing to concider none the less. I vote for side exit behind the tires.

Well I like it in front of the rear tires.
1) if you like the sound of your mufflers its cool 2) If you have to tow something it will keep carbon off of what ever you tow (with the exception of exhaust that is angled to each side). 3) I think it looks better.

If you really want it obnoxious, try 45 degree turndowns just after your Flowmasters, like mine. The rumble bounces up from the pavement and reverberates off the bottom of your truck bed. Gotta change that in the not-too-distant future. Thanks for the tips.

Mine still run out the back, just like they came from the factory.

One thing I noticed about side exhaust, you can REALLY hear how the left side of your engine is doing when driving beside those concrete highway dividers. The sound just bounces back.

i have side exit behind the tire and its pretty quiet. before i had glasspacks off the headers turned down, big difference.
the sound bounces off whatever's to the side, i think its funny when a car is beside me that i dont like (especially a "sport compact" or something similar). it gives you the option to rev it and wreak havok (not really) not that i would do that cuz i dont care but some ppl on here would prolly have fun with that.

Side exit for me. I love the sound of my Thrush bombs. If I had flowmasters, I bet it would be too loud so I'd have to say it depends on the mufflers.
Side exit is alot cheaper too when it's time to replace exhaust too! I paid $30 dollars for a pair of tailpipes (had them made) which will last me about 5 years. If I had to replace the mufflers too, it would cost me $60 total for those 5 years. It doesn't get much cheaper than that. The exhaust consists of a pair of headers, 2 mufflers and 2 tailpipes. Great for us cheapskates.

I have side exit in front of the back tires. Cheap, and not too loud unless I put my foot in it. Kinda funny looks when I am passin a rice burner and the headers are blattin right in the window. I will probably put in a cross over pipe in future, see if that quiets it down.

Should add the noise is ok with all windows shut. Can hear music and talk ok, but put em down, you gotta shout and need a thumpin stereo when cruisin (which I dont have)
