GMC Options ??

I have a 71 GMC fleet short. This truck has the coil springs in the rear. I use to think all GMC's had leaf springs. I am told coils were an option on GMC's. Is this true? Where's the proof? Also this truck has drums not disks and is six lug. Can anyone explain this, and .... where's the proof?

Re: GMC Options ??

Chevrolet - coil springs & trailing arms were standard - leafs were an option
GMC - leaf springs were standard - coil springs & trailing arms were an option

Proof?

Re: GMC Options ??

Not trying to dispute what anyone else said, but I think if you look at your option sheet you'll see that leaf spring was an option on either. Just what I've found from the trucks I've had. GMC trucks seem to be more prone to have the leaf spring option though.

Re: GMC Options ??

The proof is on the truck`s VIN-Spec sheet on the back of the glovebox door and all them numbers.Did you run down the truck`s serial number to verify the truck`s originality? The year, length, bed type,V8 vs I6,for instance.
Are rear coils listed on option list? What level of trim is listed.does the rest of the truck match?Do you have the build date on the truck. Was it a`70 titled as a`71?What does the truck`s grille look like?Is there a broad verticle cross-bar with black trim in the center, then carrying around the horizontal openings,to around the headlight bezels?Or,is the verticle cross-bar narrower, closer to the same size as the horizontal cross-bars and noblack in the center?
I guess there`s proof for about anything provided all accurate info is there to go on.We need to see what you got to give you what we got.
Your move.

Re: GMC Options ??

Look on the top LH frame rail , right around the steer box for the VIN......does it match what is on the cab? is this a 2wd, or 4x4?

Re: GMC Options ??

I have personally seen more GMC trucks with coils than leafs,a nd NONE of them called for it on the SPID label. I have also seen leafs listed on GMC trucks as optional.
I have also however, seen a couple GMC trucks with leafs and no mention of it on the SPID label.
If your truck is in fact a 71, and it has drums, then they were swapped out. Some one may have used it as a parts truck and slapped there old less desirable stuff onto the parts truck and sold it as a whole. There should be 0 GM trucks in the 10 - 30 range (1500 - 3500 in GMC talk) that ever had 6 lug (talkin 2 wheel drive here) nor with front drums... period.
Either your truck had parts swapped out, or it is not in fact a 71.

Re: GMC Options ??

Leaf spring was one option on my 70 C-20, also had Dana 60 (4.10).

Re: GMC Options ??

Here is the page.... I have the full page shown, and then a zoomed in cropped version.
Acording to this page from GMC, the coils are supposed to be standard, both 1500 and 2500 trucks.
