nagging problem

I have a naging problem when I turn at slow speeds mostly when cold I get a rubbing sound almost like a playing card in a bike wheel. Checked all my clearences on the wheells all good and it does not do it all the time. Today I am looking for anything I notice the PO put a flexlite fan and spacer on, it is like 1 or 2 centimeters from the shroud on one side. My question is could slow turning be causing some kind of body or frame flex making the fan hit the inside of the shroud? Does this sound possible? Anyway loosened shroud and moved it like 1/4 inch so have like 1/4 inch clearence now hope that was it.

That is what my fan sounded like when it was rubbing the stock shroud on the old GMC.
Now, on to that fan... have you seen the damage those blade cause when they come off and slice through the hood?

I have a plan to put on some electric ones down the road just some other more pressing matters first ya know?

If you had seen the damage Andy was talking about there wouldn't be any item more pressing. The hood is the least of your worries, if it ever goes and you are near look out!!

I had one recently take out the radiator in one of my cars. Luckily no one got hurt. change it soon. Kerry

When the fan on the Brute let go we got lucky, although it is a good thing I plan on replacing the front fenders anyway, it didnt penetrate but it left one HELL of a crease. If in doubt about a fan, make it a pressing matter, hell all else failing snag a bone orchard special electric or 2, with all the modern cars going to the electrics you can likely find something that will work (or can be made to with little modification) for cheap, then when you get the big green you can get the ones you want. I, for one will never have another engine driven fan, it aint worth it, man, the forces on those blades, when they let go they can and will do a lot of damage, and if yours is making the "card in spokes" noise I would be very concerned about the fan's lifespan. Once I get my digital camera I will try to post pics of the one that was on the Brute, one blade broke off, but the one oppodite it wasnt far behind, both had severe stress cracks and were flexing badly, we didnt pay attention to the noise. I am just VERY thankful that the only damage was a 4 inc long crease on the right front fender, and not a hole in the hood, or worse, since I tinker with it regularly, a hole in my body.

sorry if it sounds like I am ranting, but with something that can be a saftey issue I tend to get a bit...umm...yeah.

another thing to think about on thie subject... if the fan is in fact hitting the shroud, the blades are going to be that much weaker and more prone to scattering.

Yes got it, but back to the question do you think the turning could cause the body to flex in a way to move the shroud closer to the fan? I will change the fan this summer can not do it any sooner sorry.

Could very well be doing it... like I said, my GMC did it.
loose/kerfagled motor mounts
loose core support
loose shroud
loose rad
Any of these could cause it.

Thanks longhorn man And thanks for the warning I was not trying to blow you off just have to wait untill summer to put in the electrics want to do it right think I will use the flex-a-lite dual steup 295 I think anyway thanks.

I totally understand not havin the cash to do things... and not to beat a dead horse, but if you rev it high on a regular basis, or hold it over 3 grand for freeway trips.... for less than 10 bucks you can get a junk yard piece.

Might want to check the engine mounts too, to make sure it isn't moving causing the fan to hit the shroud. If the fan is hitting the shroud, there should be some marks in there. If you break the shroud, theose can be expensive to replace.
