Help with vortec worth?

I recently bought a (wrecked) 98 GMC to get the motor tranny (for a future 68 project) on the word of someone that it was a 350. I looked up the codes (later)and it turns out to be a 305 with 4l60-e tranny. The odometer says 117000 miles. I know I dont want the 305, I havent decided whether I want the tranny or not. Any how I was considering parting this truck out. Can anyone help with what that engine tranny combo should be worth together or seperate? thanks....

With that kind of mileage? You might be able to get between $1000 out of it (fairly), possibly as high as $1500. The mileage is the killer - should get a freshen up and rebuild.

That's a great engine, good fuel economy and power. I'd take it over a 350 any day (My '03 GMC Sierra had 4.8L Vortec in it, 305 I think, it kicked ass).

Re: Help with vortec worth?

4.8 and 305 are totally different engines. the 4.8 is a GenIII smallblock, and I dont think any 350's or 305's were made to GenIII(excluding the LS1/6)

the 5.0 is a good motor, and not the same as the 4.8 newer series. Like shift said, the mileage is a killer for resale. I've seen 305's go for 300 up to about 600. If it runs good, and you just want a Vortec engine, clean it up and install it into your truck. It is a good street combo and will serve you well.

Re: Help with vortec worth?

I bought the same combo for my 68. There's not much performance diff in 5.0-5.7 that a few bolt ons and comp tuning won't fix. It depends on what you want,I wanted a mild performance combo with reliablity to cruise. Besides, a stock F.I. small block in a stepside like mine should roast the tires when you want to and get 15-20 mpg on the highway JMO. Anyway I paid $500 for a 98 5.0 with tranny, comp, and harness with 58,000 miles.

HEY TEX, I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND YOU. How have you hooked up the fuel pump module on yours? PM me please.

Old guy! (just kidding) There really is no difference between the 305 and 350. Same cam, heads, and stroke for the most part. You will actually find that the 305 will be a little bit smoother.
This swap is definately worth it. You just have to keep patient during the install. Main thing is the fuel pump and the power supply
