throttle adjust

I have rod type throttle on my truck no matter how far I adjust it I can not get it to pull the linkage to the throttle stop on carb. Am I going about this wrong Do I need to pull it all the way to stops on carb to reach WOT.

Re: throttle adjust

That makes sense seems it would be hard to bend that rod. And for my second question should I be able to pull the throttle all the way to the stops on the carb? Or is there another way to tell if you are getting all the carb will give?

Re: throttle adjust

Yes, you should be able to pull the throttle all the way to the stops.

Is the rod that connects to the carburetor shortened as far as it will go?

Re: throttle adjust

What I did is as follows:

1. Use a heavy weight on the floor to put the pedal to the metal. It takes quite a bit - I first tried a single brick to no use - maybe a sand bag or something. Make sure the pedal is all the way to the floor.

2. Open the carb to WOT - if using a Quadrajet make sure the secondaries are open all the way(make sure release the stop.)

3. Adjust the boss on the rod to fit the hole on the linkage and enjoy.

Good luck - Bob

Re: throttle adjust

Pj not sure about shorting the rod but it is screwed to as short as it will go seems like the carpet is keeping the pedal from going down any further. And just to clarify the stop on the carb should stop the pedal correct? This will not hurt the carb? seems like jhows advice about bending rod will work just want to make sure it is ok that the throttle stops on the carb are what should stop the pedal, did not want to hurt carb by stomping it to the stops all the time.

Re: throttle adjust

Do this:
1--disconnect rod from carb
2--open throttle all the way--(choke open)
3--look down in carb to see if blades are almost straight up (will not go to a complete 90* so air flow will tend to shut them if they hang)
4--look to see if throttle stop lever is against stop (if not bend lever so that it rest on stop (only if throttle blades are wide open)
5--If you are running out of threads just shorten rod by cutting some off and rebending the L-shape on other end. This will cause the inside pedal rod to be higher off floor. (See sketch below)

Re: throttle adjust

The carb should open all the way, yes, but not act as a stop. You need to let the pedal act as the stop, not the carb. Adjust it to open all the way, then back it off slightly to keep the carb from slamming to it's stop.

The carb isn't designed to take the brunt of your foot pressure at WOT.

Re: throttle adjust

All carbs have a throttle stop to keep them from going overcenter.

Re: throttle adjust

Yes, but they're not sturdy enough to bear the full force from your foot time and again.

Re: throttle adjust

Wonder what happens when carpet shrinks over the years?

No argument there.

What I'm saying is this. The carb to pedal rod, little clips and fittings on the end and carb linkage, and shafts themselves are much weaker than the floor board. I'd much rather the floor board take the punishment rather than that stuff between the pedal and the carb itself.

I always adjust the carb to open WOT right as the pedal fully bottoms out. It only a take a few minutes to get it right, and the carb and linkage never get strained.

That's something that they taught me in A&P tech school. The throttle levers should hit stops right before the carbs do. I've always carried that over to automotive applications too. It makes sense.
