Hey guys,

I am getting ready to start building the back half of the frame from the cab back ; I was just curious what size stock you guys are using for your builds up? I looked at some 2x3 but that looked way too small. As of right now I am considering 3x4 3/16ths wall. Is this too large or what are you guys doing?

Hi Keith, I used 100 by 50 by 5ml thick (2 by 4) and quarter inch thick wall. Can post pics if you want?.

For a back half I use 2x4 3/16" wall.

You could get away with using 3/16" wall 2x3. For the cab back 25' should be enough. 2x3 looks to small on a full size. On a mini it looks good. I would go with 2x4 3/16".

I know 3x4 is more then enough, but I am kinda stumped on a safe way to mate the 3x5 stock frame to a 2x3 or 2x4 new back half? I started to think even 3x3 would be alright but a square frame rail would look odd, even though I will be covering everything with one of Jason's beautiful notch/tub cover combo things I still want it to look nice if I wanna take the bed off.

Btw Jr you should build me a frame and I will come pic it up

I wish I had half the talent you do not to mention the recourses you have in your garage!

That is going to be my largest obsticle is building my frame with what I have. I dont really have any good ways to cut the frame rails. I may just have to pay to have them cut so I know everything will butt up correctly.

You can cut your frame rails with a metal chop saw. They don't cost to much. It will cost more to have someone cut them for you.

I was thinking about it, but I am not sure which 1 I would need!

Where do I call it quits with my frame? I mean I can just do the notch or I can do from the cab back but if I go that far I might as well go to the front of the cab and be able to lay lower but then there is the front half! WHERE DO I STOP!?!?!?

Also Jr what is involved in a frame table? How basic can I go and still be officiant? Do I need a frame table if I only plan on building 1 frame? I am starting to think I just need to do the notch or I am going to get carried away and end up building an entire frame when i am trying to get my truck on the road.

Hi Keith, the coils are temporary. Haven't finished yet got to come up with some money for the bags and it was easier to put the coils in and be mobile. When I do that it will lay rocker with a 27" tall tire with no clearance issues.

Here are some pics of a truck that I saw, maybe 8 or 9 years ago. (sorry, the scanner I have access too, only does b&w). This guy used 2x4 steel tubes in creating his sub-frame. It looked alot better in person. Pretty simple setup really. This was built before airbags had caught on. Looking at his setup, I imagine the bed dropping over those big meats with a good pair of airbags.. Anyway, I thought his use of 2x4's looked real good (not to mention, stout as heII).

I am building the back half on my 72 right now. I used 2x4 3/16 box tubing and it worked great. I put the tubing on the underside of the frame rail and pie cut the bottom of the frame and welded it all in. It looks good. Check out the pics on www.streetsourcemag.com user name 7deuce. Theres pics of a notch I welded in first and waisted my time b/c the truck wouldnt lay out with the stock trailing arms and the monster x-member that hangs way down and new pics of the 2x4 back half. Go for the gold and hack that frame off about 8 inches from the cab wall and build new. It looks a million times better.

I will also tell you I bought a super lift kit from suicidedoors. The bottom bars I ordered were 31 inches long and the uppers were 28 inches if that helps out any. The only problem I found is that your going to either hack the bed to hell and back or body drop the ballz off of it b/c the drive shaft and the upper bars are higher than the stock bed mounts. Maybe try a watts link in the rear. SPEEDWAY has them for like 70.00 bucks. Oh, and get ready to cut the back of the cab for the D/S to clear. It never ends on these trucks. Your not working on a S 10 where you can bolt everything on. Need any more info let me know. By the way all my angle cuts are done on a 30 degree angle with a chop saw.
