1981 6cyl
When i bought my inline 6, 250 the owner said he rebuilt it. stock rebuild nothing fancy, well when he yakned the oil pan, he said there was no gasket, some silicone and that was it, well he said, it never leaked oil till the rebuild which he put on a oil pan gasket that came with the kit.. which now leaks in front of block and rear..
I cannot go a mile down the road or let it sit for 15 minutes without being a whole quart and a half low, i let it sit for a few days and theres barely oil reading on the stick.. well the owner said he went to napa and got another oil pan gasket and nothing changed.. I'm getting lost.. Any help? |

got a code, 473483 that was on the block, and then this one by the distributor reads F0804UA not sure if the 0's are letters or numbers..

Is it a one piece gasket, or like a four piece? I'm not really familiar with those motors. If it is a four piece, was silicone used where the pieces meet?
Maybe your oil pan is not perfectly flat? Rear main? Timing cover? Maybe some pictures could help if possible. -Jeremy |

I had that problem with the gasket on my 305. Upon looking at it closely, I found that the pan gasket fit wrong. It had a bulge for the dipstick on one side, and my block had it on both. It used a quart of oil every few minutes like that.
I am not at all familiar with that engine, but the troubleshooting methods should still apply. Try to find out where the oil is coming from. Clean up everything really well with a rag and brake cleaner, and see if it leaks while idling. If not, run it up the street and back, and see what gets oily. Keep driving further and further round trip, crawling under it each time, until you get it to leak a little. Then you can identify the problem. Slonaker |

oh boy all i have to do it crank it over and it spills, i will cean it up and look really hard, but other than that i see oil running out at the rear and front..
Pan gasket, prev. owner said it had just silicone nothing else.. i will see what i find.. |

i got a I6 in my truck, it had a leak so i pulled of the oil pan and there was no gasket (stock motor no rebuild) i put on in and it leaked so i took it out and just used silicone (or gasket maker) no more leaks
just an idea it worked for me |

Oh thank god! hey man thanks! how much of a bead did you use? and around the timing cover and rear main... did you put the goop to it or what?

I used a 1/8'' to 1/4'' bead on the oil pan (all the way around the top lip) thats all hope that it will work for you |

Hey thanks again! so i put on 1/8 to 1/4 bead and let it sit for a minute bolt it to the block (clean of oil of course) let it sit for a little bit and tighten it slowly and dont torque it down for like a few hours...?

let it sit for a minute, then put the pan on, tighten half way, let it semi dry and then torque it

alright, it is 7*F outside, and i am feezing!! um i have 4 bolts to go, and just wondering, the pan will come out quite easy? or will i be out there for half an hour ripping it out? LOL, thanks!

do you have a haynes manual
if not you do not have to fully remove the motor loosen the motor mounts and tranny mount, put a jack under the front of the oil pan (with a piece of wood between the pan and jack) and lift her up abit, the undo the main bolt of the motor mount and remove it ,once you have the inner motor mounts above the outer, reinstall the bolt, now the oil pan will slide out, with some wiggling (installation oposite of removal) hope this helped |
