Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
Does anybody here know what lift would be necessary on a 71 3/4 ton 4x4 to clear 37 inch tires?
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
we should make some sort of lift chart as a stickey. Ok. I would say 6 inches minimum but this would be for a street queen unless the tires are very narrow. I would shoot for 8.

Yes we do need a lift chart/tire size guide.

Someone write it all up, making sure that its all correct and it can become a sticky.

Re: Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
Thanks everyone, The tires are not extremely narrow, I have a set of 37x12.5 goodyear MT, military surplus on hummer double beadlock rims I plan to use, I really wanted to go smaller, 35 or so, but to get a decent highwy RPM with the diesel engine I plan to run, 2500 rpm governed, and still have a ring and pinion that is available in a dana 60 I got the 37s, plus they were a really really good deal. Next step is to experiment with the fit to determine what backspacing I need, since I need to have the rims recentered. I most likely will use a combination of fender trimming and lift to keep the center of gravity reasonable.

Re: Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
I used to have a truck that I had those tires on. I had them on 10" wide rims. The first pic is of the truck with probably around 5 inch or 6 inch lift. The second is around 9-10" lift. Hope this helps. Trevor

Re: Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
jracca, my brother has the same tires on his '72 GMC with a 6 inch Superlift. They fit perfect and don't rub. He's got a Dana 60 rear and 44 front and a 454 in it. I don't think you'll have a problem with 6 inches. I ran 35's with 4 inches on my '72 Blazer and didn't have a rubbing problem either.

Re: Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
I have 35s with a 6" front 8" rear lift on my 72 Blazer. With either 8" or10" wheels I will rub both the front and back tires if I'm wheeling it. On the street though or for mild trails it's fine. 37s would hit for sure on much milder stuff.

Re: Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
36x12.50-15LT TSLs on 15X8 white spoke wheels hit the rear of the front wheelwell pretty hard on my '72 K/5, on full compression while turning.
13-36-16s also hit on 16X10 rock crawlers, in the same place. The truck has a 6" Superlift in it. ( so think stiff 6" lift and still hits) I think I could get some more clearance by moving the axle forward a wee bit - front seems to clear easily. Of course Swampers tend to be a 'lil closer to the size on the sidewall, than other manufacturers, from what Ive seen/heard. -Marty |

Re: Lift necessary to clear 37's on 71 Pickup
I have been doing a lot of research and it seems that moving the front axle
1" forward helps a lot.Apparently moving the rear axle 2"s back is also a big benifit. I'm going to move my front one forward today if I find time. I have a set of 37"s found and I'm going to try to pick them up.Hopefully in a week or so I'll know what works good. I hope this helps
