I have to run an electric fan, what should I get?
My '72 suburban 4x4 is in desprate need of a good fan. Heres the deal. I just had a new motor installed and everythings working great, but the fan is not pulling enough air through the radiator. At some point the engine, transmission and transfer case had been moved back 4" inches to the 6 cylinder mounting holes and the fan is just too far from the radiator to pull sufficent air through. I think whoever lifted the sub must have moved all the drivetrain back 4 inches to confinsate for the added lift so they would only have to lengthen the front shaft. Its CRAZY!!! Another thing that makes the project difficult is the fact that the radiator looks to have come out of a 73-80 big block truck, so my fan shroud wont work. I just want to make it simple and install a big electric fan on the radiator and call it good. What should I get to keep the rig cool off road?

I have to use an electric fan. I already have a shroud and spacer and it doesn't do the job. The fan is more than a foot away from the radiator. I need low speed cooling.

All of the '72 4x4 small blocks have the engine in the 6 cyl position. The 4x4 shroud is deeper, so your fan would still be inside. Maybe get the correct radiator and shroud?

I used two 14" PermaCool electric fans with a homemade aluminium shroud.I only need to run one of the fans as it is pretty mild where I live.

The engine is not on the stock mounting location, its about 4 inches back. I just need to know what kind of electric fan you guys recommend? I need a fan that can really move some air!
Thanks, Erik

Hey bigvinnie,
So you have no low speed cooling problems with that fan? Also is it just a single fan? Thanks, Erik

I just got a dual fan and shroud setup from Wes, very high quallity work on the shroud, have'nt got it hooked up yet cause I just ordered a new four core radiator to use it on but I am sure it's going to do a better job than my old setup, if you check I'll bet your motor is in the stock location, I dont see any way to move one back any further than stock.

Here is the fan system that the guys are talking about. This one is installed in my 4X4 Blazer with a big block. It has been there for over two years and I would never go back to manual fans again.

The cheapest way to go would be to get a "Ferd Taurus" electric fan at a salvage yard they blow like a hurricane.

Hey, if you're gonna yank from another vehicle, keep it in the family as much as possible!
Any particular reason for a Taurus? Or would, say, a fourth gen Camaro work just as well? I know those suckers have to have some nasty big fans...they depend quite dearly on them, thanks to having an LT1 and not having a grille... ------------------ Project 1970 - soon to be seen at http://milhouse.treylis.org:81/

Yes, it's a single fan, and I mounted it into the original shroud, fits very well... I added an A/C condenser and trans cooler in front of the 4 row radiator, so I needed to pull more air at idle to maintain the temp... now I can sit in traffic with the A/C on, no worries... I can post pics of the finished product if you're interested.

I have to agree w/ bigvinnie. I had a perma cool electric fan on my Jeep that has an LT-1 and a 4l60e trans. I added a toyo 4-runner radiatior since it was bigger than the factory Jeep one and the fan could not keep the thing from boiling over. The heavy duty black magic fans WORK! It solved the problem I was having and now water temp dont get above 200 degrees!

I think I might go with a single perma cool 16" or 18" inch fan and see what happens.
