tearing up the yard
got home from work yesterday, and got my first chance to wheel my 70 4x4....I was very impressed, the 250 put up quite a fight while two tracking through the 10 inches of packed snow in the back yard....now I need tires that aren't smooth as a baby's butt, and maybe I can have some fun in the mud in a couple of months.
did find that the transfer case is not fond of 4lo.....i pushed the stick up as far as I could, then it slid back a little and ground when I gave it gas...if I held it in 4lo as far forward as it would go, sometimes it would catch and stay, but the first couple of times it wouldn't have it.....am I looking at linkage, fluid, or syncros? Think 70 was a dana 20....but I could be wrong, it might be a np205, its bolted to what I believe is a saginaw 3 spd. Anyone else use these old 4x4's as daily drivers with fun in the snow/mud rigs....or is it just me?  (although, I have a backup vehicle, if this one takes a mound a little too hard)

I use mine as a daily driver. I have to shut the engine off to change gears in the np205 transfer case. Once its in gear though it stays there. Have fun!

I dont have any troubles grabbing 2hi or 4 hi at all, that is actually very slick and smooth....but 4lo.....very unhappy.....oh well, until the rebuild comes along, maybe I will just stick to 4hi (with 4.56 gears....is there really such a thing as 4HI?).

I had a 72 K-5 Cheyenne Super that wouldn't stay in low range. Turned out the shifter boot was the problem. I just turned it upside down. That fixed it. Then I sold the Blazer. What an idiot!

I have a 72 as a daily that isn't crazy about being in 4-low either.
Maybe you just need to find a way to use it in 4-low more often.  You know, get it broke in and all... As already stated...you gotta throw us some pics here. |

I`d look at the linkage adjustment or for an obstruction not allowing full engagement.The grinding is from partial engagement.You most likely have Dana20.With the high-gearing in first gear,you`re gonna want that 4lo.I think the lowest ratio for 1/2t is 4.10.

Did you get the PS and Locking hubs in?

unfortunately, I regret to say the p.s. setup and lockouts...have yet to be installed....I had two actual weekends worth of time off in november, and haven't had a single day off at work since, my last day off was the 27th, and with my backup driver being used by someone else....the few hours I have can't be spent pulling apart the vehicle that has to get me to work...on the plus side, full locked hubs all the time makes getting out of the driveway in 4hi and driving to work in 2hi a little bit easier!
