What would you do? 3/4 vs 1 ton
I just completely rebuilt my 85 3/4 ton freash axels with 4.56s lockers/disc conversion. rebuilt 208 / rebuilt with best parts 700. 400 sbc just 100% rebuilt. nice clean truck, repainted chassie, lift shocks, steering everthing. with a paint job it's a show truck and the paint is not to bad now. About $7,000 spent on this thing in the last year.
Now I bought a 1 ton 84 GMC on a whim saw it has to have it 454/400/205 dana 60 4.10's truck has pw,pl,tilt, air, slider. just needs rockers/corners minor stuff and a some paint. Engine is strong as well as the rest of the driveline. do I just keep what I got or pull this 1 ton apart and build it??? Then I can say I got a 1 ton even though I will never carry that kind of weight......but it's a 1 ton you know AHHHHH!!!!!! I want everything !!! what to do ??? Why should I keep one over the other ?? Both is NOT an option sad to say. |

Sell the 1 ton to me.
Seriously, the question surrounds your plans for your truck. If you want to lift it, run bigger tires, and wheel it, go with the 1 ton. The D60/14bff/205 will make you glad that you did.

Re: What would you do? 3/4 vs 1 ton
Well, this might require a little more work, but if you plan on wheeling the 3/4 ton do this. Swap out the 3/4 ton drivetrain with the 1 ton parts. I know you juast sunk some money in the 3/4 ton axles, if you already have a 14bff out back, just swap the front axle. Regear the d60 to 4.56. Install the BB/400/205 combo. Take the old parts and put them in the 1 ton and sell it. with the refreshed parts you should be able to break even and upgraded your truck at the same time.
Now if your plans include painting the 3/4 ton to make it show worthy (with less to zero actual off-road miles), I wouldn't waste the time on the swapping of parts as it wouldn't be worth the effort. Ideally you would keep both. show off the nice 3/4 ton and wheel the wee out of the one ton....That is if you could....... If you were to part out the 1 ton for its highly desirable parts you could easily make more than you paid for it. Chevy D60 cores are going for an easy grand, ones in good shape that you could install today are worth more. 400/205 combos are about as tough as you can get for an offroad automatic. The 205 would be the highly prized 32 spline input and output version too. Perfect for a 203/205 doubler.... It's up to you in the end...

Re: What would you do? 3/4 vs 1 ton
Maybe I should just keep what I got and sell this. 1 ton complete or part it out. Hate to part it. Would be so sweet done up. What is something like this worth?? 3k ?engine/4x4 system is in perfect working order just random things need done. DAM .... I gotta think on this ... if I did not just spend all this cash on the 3/4 ....
